Hi, I have a pair of 7.4 1992 OD723544 Mercruiser Bravo1 sterndrives and need to replace a failed valve lifter, I have two part numbers, 811584 and 811583, what is the difference and which is the correct one. Thanks Ray Scott.

Welcome to iboats

Failed? In what way?
How did you attain 2 slightly different Part #s?
Did you speak with a Mercruiser Dealer as to what Part is needed?

Your motor is a GM truck motor. Look up a lifter for a 1992 GM 3500

Agree with above. If you lost 5mm, you lost the cam lobe

Pull the cam and get a cam set

Im in Australia, a bit hard to find parts for this model.
I know many folks down under building big blocks. Order from rockauto.com or summit racing.com Parts will be there in a week

Contact a Mercruiser Dealer for the Cam, they can get it. Once the New cam is in, it will need a Break In

Get the Cam from a Dealer. Lifters can be bought from several sources

Your serial number 0D723544 shows your engine to be a true MERCRUISER W/ PS 7.4L Gen V BRAVO set up Model number 474B110ES...Not the 454 Mag so you'd need part number 811584 which shows available here in the US websites for the 7.4L version.

call up Precision. https://www.precisionintl.com/ .
your cam is battered , replace it ,
the Precision people are knowledgeable and will set you up with a suitable marine camshaft. while you have it in bits replace the push rods. get a full set of lifters and check the rocker arms for ware where they contact the valve stem (common ware point on BBC).

might even pay to do the timing chain and gears while you are at it , as they are other ware points.

where in Australia are you ?.

If lifter face is worn and the cam lobe is worn, then the cam is junk. Put in a "new" lifter and it will fail again, soon after.

Replacing a Lifter on a Flat Tappet Cam, almost always results in the Cam being replaced, not too long after. Roller Cams have a much better Survival Rate

Another point, the lifters and cam break in / seat in together. Should never mix them up after break in or failure is usually imminent.
