This is my first major rebuild project, Someone let the boat sit full of water for a long time and it has rotten the main stringers, among other things. It was deceptive when we purchased it because it wasnt soft at all from the top. We removed the tank to inspect the tank and the area around it and found all of this. My major question is if I can gain access to the length of the stringers, can I just scab onto them and glass that in? Should I cut out the interior side of glass and remove all wood and start from there? I am trying to avoid uncapping the hull. IMAG0202.jpgIMAG0201.jpgSeems resasonable but I dont want it to fail in the near future. I have some fiberglass experience but in a completely different field, I own a car audio store and we do some fiberglass. Does anyone have experience with this hull?

Re: Hydra Sport 2500WA Project. Stringer replacement Ideas

Is this an I/O or Outboard boat? If there has been water below decks for a long enough period of time to rot the stingers then you should DEFINETLY do a thorough inspection of the transom. 9 times out of 10 if the stingers are that bad then the transom has rot in it as well. If that is the case then you should take the cap off to make the job easier. The easiest way to determine all of this is to drill the stringers and transom down LOW with a 3/8" drill about 3/4" deep but NOT all the way through. FROM THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT. IF you get light brown DRY shavings then you're good to go. If dark brown WET shavings then you have a Project on your hands. I do NOT recommend Scabbing in Stringers. If you want to do it right, grind out all of the glass, down to the hull and start from scratch. Lots of threads here to help you. Just search for replacing stringers and transoms and you'll find all you need.

The boat is an outboard boat. Originally it was a 20" transom that sometime in its life span someone had a stainless steel plate installed to run 25" outboards. The transom seems good but I will give it the drill test.

I am pretty decided on taking the cap off of the hull, does anyone have any particulars to help on how to actually remove it?

Label Everything ! ..

Remove the Rubrail and start unscrewing ( unless it riveted then start drilling out the rivets )..

Made some good progress today. Got layer 1 of the cap off, tomorrow on to the actual floor. Definitely interesting having the top half of your boat hanging 10 ft off the floor.IMAG0209.jpgIMAG0208.jpg

Woahhh, serious project! you aren't messing around with getting that cap off in two days. I'd be careful to make sure that you support the cap evenly so it doesn't warp while its being stored

The problem I seem to be running into now is I don't know whats holding the floor cap onto the hull other than the glass mat around the cap on the edges. I have ground through most of that already and its not real loose. Im thinking when it was made it had 5200 (or equivalent back then) between the cap and the floor. That should make it real interesting.

Finally got the floor off the boat. Started gluing plywood together for stringers.

Well I'm not sure if I have lost my mind or not but I am seriously considering transforming this into a center console (my preferred style of boat). Thinking of building complete new floor and using the top cap only. Building the v style fish/storage/seating at the front and glassing it to the original cap. Anyone done this kind of conversion? I dont care for nor need the cabin.

Impressive. That's not the typically pop the cap off and start ripping type job. This is going to be slick whatever style you decide on.

Sorry for the long time in between posts. Finally have the transom in!!! 4 Layers of 1708 Biaxial should do. Now I can start on the stringers.

I am thinking of doing the same to my project. I will be following your progress. Good luck!
