Hi again!

I have another problem, which i'm not familiar with. The boat is a 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 330 with twin 5.7L mercruiser engines & hurth v-drives. The problem is that the v-drive shaft is leaking. Does anyone know how to dismantle the shaft? Do we have to take out the engines? How many seals are in there and where can i get them? How do i seal the shaft back? Here the data about the drives:

Manufacturer: Hurth marine
Model: HSW630V1-155
Ser. no.: 1525766C
Ratio: A-1-56
B-1-157

Thanx

Alex-
Your shaft packings are leaking. First thing to determine is what type of seal you have- conventional or dripless. I can't help with dripless, but with conventional packings try to access the stuffing box nuts. If you can, then you can try tightening them a little to see if it helps. If not, then you'll need to replace the packing. You shouldn't need to take the shaft out. I HIGHLY recommend GFO packing. The job isn't too difficult if you can get to the hardware (which might be tricky with v-drives).

Here's a little primer on how to do it:

I find about half the time its easier to remove the enginge/drive assy. hardest part about it is shaft alignment. other than that it depends on what stuffing box was used as to how to fix it. but is your complaint about the clutch leaking oil or the shaft leaking seawater ?. can you post some pictures of the packing box assy ?

Various dental picks work real well for packing removal.
Tightening the stuffing box is a learned technique show check it regular for bit of time afterwards.

Hi all!

Thanx for the link above, it cleared the things a bit. Rodbolt, the shaft is leaking seawater! The thing is, the shaft is going under the engine, so i can't see what it looks like. Looks like i'll have to remove the engine & gearbox in order to get to it. I can currently only feel the hose & 2 clamps. If i look at the picture on this page, i don't feel any of the threads or nuts, just the clamps & hose. I can even put my little finger inside the hose and feel something soft inside. Is there anything missing? Could the flex be inside that hose? Or is it a conventional seal?

Thanx

Once you get the nut off you'll see where the packing is.

The problem is, that there is NO nut (from what i can feel with my fingers), only the hose with clamps.

Sounds like you need to get a visual on it. Be nice to snug it up a little if you could get a couple of wrenches on it or to change it. But at 10 years it might be a good idea just to change the packing any way.

As mentioned earlier sometimes it's best and fastest just to get everything out of the way.

Do both shafts by the way since they both have the same birthday.:)

A digital camera held down there works wonders. Snap a few pictures with the flash and see how that works out.
