I have a 1993 20ft hurricane deck boat with a 85hp yamaha out-bored. (love my engine) Im taking on water. not while sitting still but while Im running and the faster I go the more water I take on. More than the bilge pump can handle (but the pump is working fine). I am a very new boater and Im trying not to become discouraged as I am on a budget! Please help!

Shey, the new boater!

Welcome to iBoats!

You're going to need to do a thorough inspection of the bottom of the hull. There has to be a crack, hole or something that's allowing water into the hull. You may have to change the location of the boat on the trailer to be able to find it.

arrrgh.....

not a good problem to have....

but fear not ......we can help you find it.....and fix it.

woodie is again correct.

there are only 3 possibilities here.

1. hole in hull.

2.bad water intrusion thru the cap hull joint. (this is unlikely because at fast speed while plaining...the intrusion will subside.

3. live well thru hull problem.

like woodie....im betting on the first.

Re: Please Help

My bet is a live well drain hose is off or broken, probably one that gets some water flow at speed, like on the bottom of the hull as opposed to the transom. Run some hose water into the livewells and see which one isn't draining out the through hull fitting. I've seen cracked hoses be a SOB to find, they won't leak until there is pressure from outside while running. If nothing becomes apparent by filling the livewells, plug every hole at the hull from the outside with those rubber expanding plugs. Run the boat and see if it leaks, unplug them one at a time until the culprit reveals itself.

It's the right time of year to find cracked hoses. If the boat is not drained, winterized right the water from the livewell lays in the hose until it freezes, then it expands a little, cracking the hose.

The good news is, it looks like the hull isn't compromised.
