How does it steer Bear?
I'm guessing you have hydraulic, is it easier to steer one way or the other and how does the boat respond to your steering input?
By that I mean is the steering heavy or light & flighty at speed?
I'd be interested to hear of any steering differences raising the motor makes.

Hi Fed,

Steering is hydraulic, and I saw no difference steering in either direction.

At WOT and 100% trim the steering input was normal.

The overall steering was incredible! No matter how hard I pushed into turns the U4 stuck to the water like glue, no slip.... I had a huge :D on my face, because that is the performance in regards to steering I was looking for. None of the 3 blade props could steer like the U4, they would slip and ventilate in tight turns. Now we just need to find correct pitch , and get the F150 in it's WOT power band.

Good news!

I just spoke with my buddy that owns an auto repair shop. He's gonna help me raise the F150 tomorrow night! This means I should be able to test the U4 and see what kind of RMP it's capable of with this variable change. Then we can most likely select the correct pitch... I bet a U4 at the correct pitch will have an awesome hole-shot!

Got the F150 raised one hole. Now the anti-cavitation plate is perfectly even with the bottom of the hull. I'll be testing the U4 on Saturday, and report the data, along with any other results noticed from this change...

Thanks Bear nothing better than real life feedback.
Can you check for steering differences for me please.

Hi Fed,

What a great day for a prop test!

Well now that the F150 is raised.....

Temp 29 F
Winds NE 10-20 mph
Water temp 52 F

Wish us luck!

Good times!!!!!!

Results this afternoon...

Re: Hurricane deck boat 3 to 4 blade stainless prop

Hey Gang,

First off doing WOT runs at 29F with 10-20 mph winds is not good times... :(

But the data and findings are very interesting...

Prop:Turbo U4 14.25 x 19"p
Winds: NE 10-20 mph
Clear
Light chop. ( stayed close to NW shore to avoid caps/heavy chop )
Boat conditions: 500lbs gear/2 adults, +25 gal fuel.
Smart Tabs with 60 lb actuators.

Test with vent holes open.
Data is average of 6 runs.

Max time to plane: 5.25 sec
Max rpm @ WOT no trim: 4100
Max rpm @ WOT 100% trim: 5150
Max speed GPS @ WOT 100% trim: 40.9

Comments: Hole Shot was better than lower motor height. We noticed that the 3 runs into the wind, and 3 runs with, had a difference of 2.9 mph, so we took the average for all the data listed above. The F150 ventilates easier in hard turns, at anything less than trim fully down. Still good grip, but not like I felt with the F150 one hole lower. We now see an increase of 400 rpm at new new motor height. So depending on props, only real testing can accurately determine how it reacts. I was only expecting a gain of ~ 200 rpm, so this is cool stuff. I still like the grip of the U4 tested at the lower motor height, but maybe simple change in the props profile (rake?) will allow me to keep the more efficient engine height. I'm my mind either a 17 or 15"P 4-blade of some yet unknown manufacture is in the F150's future...

Note: Due to cold temps we decided to not test with vent holes plugged. The data from the last test showed minimal change, so we blew it off...

Re: Hurricane deck boat 3 to 4 blade stainless prop

I know i'm coming in a little late on this one, but I will say for handling and hold plane at lower speeds the more blades the better is the only answer. I was wondering about your choice in the Power Tech of the MQS, looking at your pictures and especially if you are moving the engine up you may want to look at a 4 blade flats prop or a bass boat prop. If you are looking for more stern lift you'll want to look at something with a straight back blade.

Re: Hurricane deck boat 3 to 4 blade stainless prop

At this point and using the tabs we're probably looking at a 17 either in a 3 or 4 blade. Maybe a 15 4 blade and doing some tweaking. If we're looking for top speed we need to test without the tabs. There are some things that came thru testing as expected, some unexpected. If we add setback we may find some more efficiency. If we add a hydraulic jackplate we'll see more versatility.

The automatic tabs seem to help in the low and mid range but still influance things at the top end. It'd be nice to have the option to use the tabs when needed and then lose them (up & out of the way) as the speed increases.
