Re: Hunting Big Bass

It's all part of their survival strategy. They don't all spawn at the same time. Some go early, in case a later catastrophe kills off the adults, some go late in case something happens to the earlier born fry. So there'll always some be some pre- or post-spawn bass around during the "spawn." Staging, recovering, moving into their summer pattern.

They don't eat during, natures way of preventing 'em from eating their own young. But they will fiercely protect the nest while its got eggs or fry. Makes 'em extra hungry afterwards.

But if you C&R a bedding bass, by the time you get her back in the water & she recovers from the fight & gets reoriented, the eggs will have been eat up by turtles or bluegills or whatever else is there.

Re: Hunting Big Bass

Wow, and all this about a fish. Guess I am the dumbest fisherman around because I do not know how to spot a bass fish bed. I guess I could just not fish during the spawn for fear of actually hitting a bed or perhaps not run my boat as it might frighten the fish off protecting the bed or maybe we should just close the lakes altogether. Common sense will leave us with clean lakes and lots of fish it is the total disregard of for polution and netting etc. that is the real problem. Remember when you vote, there is only one environment!!

Alright now, I got no response on how to spot these bass beds to avoid casting into them. I am sure I have hit one or two in 50 years of lure chucking but no on purpose.

And on this fish and release business, I guess so you ever tried to clean one of those darn things. Get blood everywhere and thats not counting the scales. Although fresh fish at a camp site is mighty tasty.

If the water has a clarity of 4-5' then you just wear polarized sunglasses and find an area of the lake that has some cover be it lilly pads or overhanging brush and cruise along the bank and try and find them depending on the bottom color you will see dark or light spots that the bass have fanned away the leaves and such to get to the small gravel or sand. Thats a nest. You should start looking when the water temp gets to about 60. (Thats the way it is here anyway). When the water gets to about 65, durring the next full moon, you will have a spawn. I dont site fish, and Im not to keen on others doing it, (Snagging does take place), but I will cast where I think there may be one and I know most of the best nesting places on my home lake. Sometimes its just fun to cruise along and just watch them deffending there nest from the bluegill and such. The Bluegill are actually pretty smart, they will team up and one will go in and get the bass to chase them off then when they are gone the others swarm in and have a feast on the eggs.

Hey cool dude, I think next spring I will go looking. I enjoy watching nature and animals so I am sure it will be fun to sit back and just see what I can spot. For all the others I promise not to use this new information to slaughter the big ones. But I do enjoy having the experience. Thanks again.

Re: Hunting Big Bass

Thanks Jtex, I see at least one other person on this site has a real clue as to what the point is here.

Gofishie,, gee whiz,, thanks so much for the enlightenment.Staging bass?? Whoda thunk it!! I have learned so much from your post,, I am sure I will be a better angler. Maybe even be in the money in my next tourney!! I am sure the members of our local bass club here will be interested in your knowledge of the Black Bass. I'll be sure to print it out and take it to the ramp Sunday morning so we can all have the inside track on the bigguns! Why armed with that knowledge I am sure some 16 or 20 LB bags will be brought to the scale.

As far as your quiz,,, Give me a break.

I am really done here, this is like shoveling sh!t against the tide

Sorry this statement just isnt true. Sure its tough sometimes to get them to bite. They are not biting it to eat it, they just want it out of there nest. They will just pick it up and move it off the bed a few feet and spit it out. Quite fun to watch. Best thing I have found to **** them off real bad is a plastic craw, they hate them in there nest. I have tied one on without a hook before just to play with them. I really have to get a life. More fun than playing with the cat though. Kinda the same thing.

Re: Hunting Big Bass

yeah I tried them all craws, crawtubes, tubes, lizzards, jigs. Maybe you have gotten them off the bed but for me? all they do is look at it and then go back to the bed. Why the crap are we talking about sight fishing bedding fish in July anyway?

Re: Hunting Big Bass

i thought all the lunkers were loners holed up in the deep or off on their own, larger adults usually push out the smaller ones so they have more to eat.

you have to be really dedicated to fishing them - meaning low #'s of fish but of larger size.

The other thing that I noticed is that the bigger the lure the bigger the fish - this is not a 100% rule there are plenty of lunkers caught on small lures and vice versa.

It is more of a food chain nature thing, adults dont order kids happy meals they order the big mac supersized meals

Re: Hunting Big Bass

Tomatolord:

You are very much correct, but you may find several big fish schooled together.

Just yesterday after I dropped off my party, I went back out abought 10 AM to try something. I know this one long cove, (short arm), that holds lots of fish in the spring but fills in quickly with weed growth, I motored into it slowly watching the fish finder to see where the weeds started. There was an area of abought 100 yards where the weeds were, but sparce, about 15-12' depth, so I marked the beginning and end with a marker bouy. Then I went up wind and let the light wind drift me through the area using a texas rigged plastic with just enough wieght to keep the worm just off the bottom. When I felt the bait touch bottom I would just lift it up about a foot or two. I got lots of action, caught four nice bass around 3-5 #s in about an hour. I caught no small fish. The biggest fish came with a plastic craw type bait then I had to go to my real job. My point being that every fish I caught had at least one more about the same size follow it up to the boat. Ill use this technique with the clients I have tomorrow afternoon.
