Re: Hunter 1976 shaft packing......
find out what size it takes then get flax packing just a little over size.It will come on a roll, grab roll of paking, tube of grease, sharp knife, hammer& piece of iron to use as an anvil - Now,jump down in the builge with all this and pull a linth of paking off the roll "Don't Cut Yet" rap it around shaft and measure one ring at a time and cut one ring at a time. After you cut three rings hammer them flat enough to slide into paking gland, then measure them again trim the ends so when put around shaft the ends will just meet - Now,asumming you have the packing gland apart and the flange slid up out of the way AND you have removed the old paking with a paking puller - grease the new paking and install one ring ends up and slide into gland with flange then next ring with ends down slide into place with flange next ring ends up and slide into place with flange - now put the nuts on flange and tighten this will push paking into gland - NOW I don't know how much your paking gland will hold but you might need to put three more rings in - USE plenty of grease and when running be sure to check to see that water is dripping while running ,this cools the shaft VERY IMPORTANT! when you get back to the dock shoot a couple shots of grease in glands grease zirk this will stop the drip so your boat dosn't sink - You got it easy the shafts on the boat I run are 8inch and take 1 1/2in paking
