Hull support when cutting out stringers?

Me again.. :)

Is it necessary for supplemental hull suppport when removing stringers? Upper deck is on and the boat is sitting on a bunk trailer that supports it for more than 1/2 it's length although those bunks are under the stringers. Obviously what I'm concerned with is since the stringers are the main structural support that the hull will take a bow from the weight when they are removed. Should they be done one at a time or can both be done at the same time? (Boat only has 2 stringers)

Thanks!
Roger

Re: Hull support when cutting out stringers?

Mine had six stringers, and I cut them all out in addition to removing the upper deck. I left my boat on the roller trailer. I was worried about flex, warping, hooking, and bowing so I carefully monitored the hull when glassing in the new stringers. I glassed them in one a day, so that they would be cured for when I glassed in the next stringer.I also started with the outermost stringers, and worked my way in, side to side. I developed no problems, in fact the hull was more true when complete due to the hook the hull had taken by having all the weight of watersoaked rot resting on the rollers. It was a few months between when I gutted it to when I glassed the new structure, so the hull was able to go back to its original "memory".

In your case, you only have two stringers to worry about. Just do the work and make sure you pay attention to the hull bottom, even if you are just sighting along the bottom. You still have the upper deck on, so that will keep its width correct and it shouldn't twist. Good luck...

The size of your bunks can make a difference on this. You may want to cut one stringer out and see if it flexes. If it does then shore that side up and glass away. Then do the other side.

When cutting the floor out leave 6" or so around the edge to help keep the hull straight too...then cut the rest out after the stringers are glassed in. The more wood you take out the more chances you have of distorting the hull.

a good way to see if'n you got a 'wrack'/twist,,, is lay a good 2x4 across the boat at mid-ships...

stand back an 'eyeball' the 2x4 with the top of the transom...

you'll be able to tell minute discreptences...

jack up accordingly..
