Hull/Deck Joint

My dad and I just got a project boat, that's not in too bad of shape, but someone removed the deck from the hull and only put screws back every two feet. Question, should we just put screws back in every 4-6 inches or should we seal it with something first, or fiberglass it? It's a 26ft Wellcraft Nova and will be going offshore. Thanks in advance.

Wonko

My boat had screws every 6 inches and was then fiberglaessed inside to seal the seam. This was the way it was originally. You should be able to tell how it was originally.

Re: Hull/Deck Joint

On my boat, the hull and deck are joined together by the extrusion. Mine has screws ~every 2 inches. Closer spacing towards the front (~every 3/4 inch). I swear that the guy at Larson Boats in charge of installing the extrusion must've been paid by the screw. I replaced the screws and sealed the joint with 3M 5200 marine sealant. (Factory joint was also sealed) But my boat is only a 14 footer and will not be venturing offshore, so I didn't see a need to glass the hull and deck together.

Mine had silicone sealer all the way around, then screws about every 6 inches. Had to take a filet knife to cut it before I could remove the top.Still havent got all the silicone off.

Re: Hull/Deck Joint

you should seal the deck to hull joint with a marine specific sealant like 3M 4200 or 5200 (the 5200 is deemed a VERY permanent type bond if used according to directions, where 4200 is a bit less "agressive")

the screw spacing you mention at every 2' seem a bit far apart. My 16 footer had "deck to hull" screws about every 12" and then the rub rail was fixed on with screws spaced every 12" between the deck to hull screws (that went thru the rub rail and thru the hull to deck joint) so in essence the spacing was around 6" or just a bit more. It was a very similar spacing on the 20' boat I'm also working on.

HTH

Re: Hull/Deck Joint

Thanks for the input guys, sounds like I don't need to glass it up. I will get some of the 3M sealant and seal it up and then put screws back in the original holes. Sorry Craig W I wasn't clear earlier, it actually has holes every 4"-6", but whoever put the deck on only put screws in every 2'.

wonko

Re: Hull/Deck Joint

To be honest, I have no idea why. The engines (twin Mercruiser I/O's) are easily accessible, the fuel tank isn't hard to get to and hasn't been replaced. Someone did paint a new stripe down the side and the paint does go up under the lip so the only thing I can figure is they did it to paint it.

Wonko, just wondering here.. is the deck and hull joint currently seperated? or you are just commenting that it appears that it has been and they only put screws back in every 2' (however there are holes every 4"-6", ie. there are extra holes) is the "stripe" you are refering to a rub rail (usually a flexible rubber/plastic strip set into an aluminum "channel") or just a painted stripe and the lip is the hull-deck joint? if it is a rub rail, have you removed it? There *is* a slight possibility (should be a likelyhood) that there are additional screws under the rub rail, which means that even though it may appear on the outside the screw spacing is only every 2', it could actually be less than that. The best way to check if this is true is to see if you can look from inside the boat, under the "gunnels" to see if there are additional screws.

to further add to the joint sealing issue, to seal it properly, you should seperate the joint -remove the rub rail and any screws holding the joint together, spread the joint apart (I did it a section at a time) clean the joint thoroughly and then inject sealant into the open joint, let it set back closed and then rescrew the deck joint and put the rub rail back on (if it had one -if not, you may want to put one on)

Actually, it would be best if I could show you guys. I'll take some pictures this weekend and post them so you guys can take a good look.
