Capped nuts and a dab of grease on the threads, never had any come loose and never been stuck with seized nuts.

If your running hubcaps or don't care what it looks like....................
After installing dry lugnuts, just spray a tiny bit of any sort of sticky, stay put lube over the lugnut and stud.
I prefer white lithium grease.

Re: Hub bolts rusted on

I can't remove the tires on my trailer because the bolts are rusted What are my options?

If they are the lug bolts get a BFH and a hunk of heavy bar steel, etc.
Place steel bar on bolt head and give it a hefty hit with the BFH.

For people who use neverseize, you do realize that this is ment for apps under heat, and dissimular metals. Pam works well to stop the rust together.

A premium quality copper anti-seize and thread lubricant that may be used to prevent seizing, corrosion and galling where high temperature conditions exist.
Temperature range -30?F to 1800?F (-34?C to 982?C). Provides good electrical conductivity. Meets Mil Spec A-907.

Minus 30 degrees is mighty hot.

its best not to put anything on lugs. if you heat them much to get them off, i would think about replacing them as they heat can change the metal. I have heard of using Loctite 242 blue on lugs. this is designed to be used to keep oxygen away from the threads, it also keep the threads from loosening. it is designed to be taken apart for servicing, it is not the hardening type that Locks the threads like a weld. the problem still exists as to Torque on the bolts. i believe it would change how much and could be an issue.

You know how many gears and sprockets I have taken off with never seize (cooper) that are gallded? I prefer just useing a very light coating of grease.

I never use any grease on my lugs. I've heard of some folks up north just hit them with WD40 a few times a year even when they are not coming off... supposedly it displaces the water. A buddy of mine in CT seals them with future floor polish and an airbrush. Said they come off clean and don't rust as water and O2 cant get to the threads. Hmmmm.

The galling topic isn't really applicable here anyway since trailer studs/nuts don't usually gall even if the threads are dry. Galling is more prevalent in stainless or chrome applications. I have no idea what kind of gears or sprockets you are talking about but they are not trailer lug nuts.

I currently have personally owned vehicles with a total of 208 lug nuts on them right now. Every one of them has never-seize on the threads, and I have been using it on lug nuts for 30+ years.

How many have I removed that were galled?? None.

How many were rusted on after using N-S?? None.

How many came loose on their own just driving down the road?? None.

That has been my personal experience using N-S on trailer hubs and every other lug nut in my fleet of vehicles. You can use whatever you want on your lug nuts. I'm just saying what I use and the results I have had.

I guess it comes down to weather your one to follow manufacture recommendations or move onto experiment with different options. Just don't do something that will injure your fellow motorist.

I live right off I95 a real busy stretch. One wheel incident a month. Several deaths.

I took mine to a tire shop and they got my rusted lug nuts off. Then I replaced them all with chromed and capped lug nuts for about $60.

Re: Hub bolts rusted on

I had thatexact problem on the side of the highway yesterday. I had a tire explode on me and the fender ripped the tire to shreads. I have a spare so no big deal. Jacked it up, got to the 6th lug nut and it came 2/3 of the way off. Then the stud started to spin. I tried to get in back of the stud with a flat blade crew driver but unable to because of the disk breaks. OK.. Ill just pull the hub as i carry and extra hub fully assembled and ready to go.

Took out the nut holding the bearing together and the brake calliper was still connected. (oops) Took out bolth pins holding the calliper on but was unable to pull the calliper due to the inside diamiter of the wheel. Ok.. So you want to play hard ball. Fine, I start takeing the bolts off the mounting plate that holds the calliper and they are rusted tight and wrenches are just rounding the rusted nuts and bolts. Now its time for me to break out the big guns. I tryed to be nice.

Back of the truck grabed me generator and my grinder. With a fire extinguisher close by I took a cutting wheel to the rusted crappy lug nut and stud. 15 minutes later it isnt a lug nut no more. Off came the sheaded tire. Off came the hub and disk assembly, cleaned the spindle and new grease. New hub back on. Disk breke reassembled and spare time on. All torqued and I headed home.

Moral of the story: For a stud that isnt playing nicely, Grind it off. Carry a generator and grinder when on the road. Lots of tools, spare tire, fire extinguisher and a sence of humor. The state trooper that was parked in back of me ( Thank you) was impressed at the completeness of the road side fix.
