Hi I bought this timing light Sunpro CP7527 and don't know how to use it.

I connected it to wire #1 and pointed it at the timing tab and it started to flash. Thats it.

Isn't it supposed to have a gauge to tell me the degree or something to show me some numbers.

I know that this sounds pretty dum but I am stump.

Also what is this engine supposed to be set at. It is a 1988 GM 4.3l merc thunderbolt ignition.

Thank you.

Re: How to use a Timing light

I just looked it up on google, it's a basic timing light, not an advance timing light. They also come with a "Detailed Instruction Manual"
You aim it at the timing mark on your timing chain cover and look at what number lines up with the mark on the harmonic balancer and the tab with the numbers on the timing chain cover. Then you turn the distributor to change where it's at.

Look at page 6A-7 in the link below.

Thanks.

So, All I have to do is point the light at the timing tab, watch for the light and timing marks to match up, and if they don't turn the distributor?

New points, and dwell set before the timing was read?
If not, do that first.

Let me add; what does your factory manual says it should be? Buy one, it will save you money, and maybe some lives. You need to know your boat, if it breaks down.
