Light pressure with your thumb on the spool....takes some practice but after you get the feel of it...no more back lashes.

Have fun,
Dave

Marty, years ago when I first moved to this area, I caught a bazillion salmon and steelhead using a fiberglass rod and a Mitchell 300. Eventually "moved up" to Shimano and Ambassador reels, with Loomis graphite rods. Didn't catch any more fish, but it's more fun with a casting reel: better feel for the bottom and better balance when bringing in larger fish.
I was reading this thread and trying to analyze why I don't get "professional overspin." (at least very often!). I don't use the casting brakes, but, like Lexington, I do use my thumb on the spool to keep the reel from overspin. I also use my thumb to help the drag as I'm landing fish; an educated thumb is better than unknown mechanics any day.
Oh, oh.....now that I'm thinking about it, I'm doomed....

They make a thing called EEZI-CAST here.Just clips onto the reel and no more backlash.Don't know if you get them there.

Re: How to use a baitcasting reel....

I acquired my nickname many years ago while learning to cast with my first baitcaster. Persistance will pay off for those willing to practice practice practice. One trick I learned was to hold the rod so that the spool is facing left on an overhand cast (right handed cast) and up on a sidearm cast. Control the spool with the thumb. Proper adjustment of the free spool is vital. To adjust, hold the rod at 11 o'clock with the lure within a few inches of the rod tip, when the lure is allowed to drop, the speed should be a slow steady drop to the ground. When the lure hits the ground, the spool should stop....not continue to freespool (the cause of the backlash/professional overspin/birdnest). If it drops too fast, tighten the knob in the center of the side of the reel (not the star drag). If it drops too slowly or doesn't drop smoothly to the ground, then loosen the knob. Once you've got it down for that 1/2 ounce lure and change to a 1 1/2 ouncer, you must re-adjust for the heavier lure. Hope this long post makes some sense. ;)
Backlash

Don't cast into the wind, or get used to the birdnest. Those birdnests make great little ornaments for your Christmas tree.
