How to test VRO system

Just picked up a 1985, 70hp Johnson with the VRO. It hasn't been running in at least 5 years. Is there a way to test the VRO before I attempt to start it? I don't want to learn too late that the VRO wasn't working and ruin the motor. I've deleted the VRO on another engine in the past but would rather leave it alone if it's working. Also, is there an alarm that sounds if the VRO were to suddenly quit while operating? Thanks for any input.

Start it on a measured amount of fuel in a portable container. This fuel should have 50 to 1 oil in it just in case the vro is dead.

Then put in a measured amount of oil in your own contraption with a clear tube feeding it.

After idling it for awhile do the math. At idle it should be between 75 and a 100 to one.

Yours should be closer to 100 to 1 I believe.

The pulse limiter coming out of the block should be blue and not black. That is a service bulletin update.

I'm not aware of other ways but there could be....others will know.

Learn how to test the alarm.

I had a 90hp VRO and tested as follows. Use a portable fuel tank mixed at 100/1, mark the current oil level in the VRO bottle and use it for a day. Avoid long wide open throttle runs for your test. If you used 3 gallons of fuel, oil level should have dropped by at least 4 oz. (Calculated at 100/1 VRO usage). Fill oil bottle back to your mark to see what you used.
Best case, you burned about 6oz from oil bottle and you ran a rich oil mixture for your test and hurt nothing.. start using straight fuel in tank. Worst case, VRO is not oiling, and you discovered this with no risk of burning down your powerhead. Good luck!

If there are wires coming from the VRO it has an alarm.------A factory manual has a test procedure.----I would not trust a1985 version of VRO.
