how to test regulator

can anyone post how to test regulator that is out of the boat?:confused:

it would be a regulator, it has 5 wires coming out of it 2 yellow and 2 red and 1 gray, it is manufactured by cdi

Easiest way is on the motor. Disconnect the yellow wires to each regulator in turn. If the one left hooked up is bad, the battery won't charge. (under 13 volts.)

The early clear potted mercury regulators usually looked burned when they failed.

it is starting to look more and more like 2 new regulators are in my future,what started out as trying to get the tach to work is getting deeper, iam thinking that the person who had the boat before me must have burned up the tach and then unplugged it , and just ran the boat as is,looks like more testing before i do anything else thanks.:)
