Have you thought about driving a dump truck? Thats what I do. About as lazy of a job as you can get(not implying you are lazy, but I am). I make in the mid 30's and am home for dinner every night. Very easy work. Just sit in an air ride seat and shift gears. Try to get on at a concrete plant, so that you can haul rock nd sand. Rock quarries are generally smoother to run in than a jobsite hauling red dirt.

Hey OMC,

First of all, you are to be congratulated for taking a positive step rather than accepting your current situation. You do sound a bit discouraged, but not at all frightened, so do what you can to maintain an upbeat attitude. If you feel yourself slipping into depression, see a doctor.

I volunteer with high school students who need 'redirecting'. Among other things we tell them that without goals, you won't know when you've arrived... but a goal without a plan is just a dream. Plans make things real. It also is helpful to recognize that sometimes plans have to be radically changed to fit a changing situation. Don't let life be what happens while you are making plans, but do plan your life.

I hope they have your RA diagnosed properly, and that you are getting all the help you need to deal with it. From my viewpoint, the best areas you could be involved in are customer service, or a boutique which caters to art and music, perhaps a used book, CD and DVD business. You could work it both on-line (ebay) and through a fixed location. Another area to consider is driving for the mobility impaired, working as a golf course ranger, or getting a job in a state park as a park specialist.

Whatever you choose, do some research, make a plan, and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Good luck, and warm wishes...

funpilot

OMC if you live near Fort Drum look at this site http://cpol.army.mil/
A lot of the jobs that soldiers use to do now are being converted to civilian positions. These are mostly the clerical jobs. Very low impact on the body and working for uncle sugar comes with good benefits. I know your pain I was in the Army for 21 years a lot of my moving parts are just about worn out. Good luck!

:)

First step.....find something you enjoy that you can do physically.

Step Two.....Convince yourself you can do it.

Step Three.....Go after it.

Sounds easy. Really it is. Look at colleges. Most are filled with a mix of older and younger people. My Tech school I went to ranged in age from 17 to 86. That 86 year old was an inspiration to all, he wanted something and went after it.
Sounds like you have some hurdles to get over, but that just makes the getting there sweeter. Don't be afraid of failure, it really isn't that bad.
Not much for advice, but with it and a buck you may be able to get a cup of coffee.

just my 2 cents...

Government work

1 - the govt (city, state, local) hire the disabled probably in a larger proportion than other companies - great benefits - decent wage

2 - large public companies - especially utilities (phone, hospitals, power, large banks) again they hire a large amount of disabled

These companies have quotas to meet for the disabled number of employees

You also need to start with a list of 2 things

1 - things you CAN do - so you can also tell the employer you want to dwell on the positive side of what you can do not the negative

2 - things you like to do

Try the state for teaching grants - many states pay the tuition IF you agree to be a teacher in the state at the end of the program, if you can go to school again, to learn to be a teacher (vocational teaching etc), the pay is not great but the benefits

Another thing I didn't post. Most colleges have grants for about anyone that has limited or low income. These grants are designed to pay for both the school and some living expenses. The more expensive the school, the more money they give. If the school is not designated a "commuter college" then you will also get a housing allowance in the grant.
You have the desire to do something. This puts you far ahead of most people in your situation. It is very hard for a man working hard all his life to have it all taken away by health. It is easy to get down and fall into the rut of depression. Pick what you are interested in and go for it. If you decide to change paths in the middle, what is the harm? It is not the end result, it is the journey there.

Thanks for all the ideas and advice. cuzner, I suck at fishing. I do it for the sole purpose of relaxation and fun. I do catch fish though.
