How to set the shift and throttle cables and mechanisms?

I noticed today that WOT on the tower linkage (50HP) is not fully opening the throttle butterfly. So I lengthened what I assume is the throttle rod here. That seems to fix it and now the butterfly is flat and parallel to the choke butterfly.

But I'm also noticing that the shift linkage is a little off to where in neutral on the shift control, it's almost in forward on the motor. I can adjust the linkage to where the lever is dead center on the shift interlock switch for starting. But with this correct, the motor is just starting to go into gear.

Is there a good video on the topic? I found my old manual but I didn't see anything about adjusting the throttle butterfly in it.

The butterfly doesn't have to be level to achieve WOT.
Disconnect the shift and throttle connectors at the motor.
Then activate the shifter and end up in N
Then adjust the cable ends so they slide over the ball

I found a page in my manual about matching the shift rod to the shift mechanism in the motor caul that says find FWD mark the position, find REV mark the position, then set Neutral on the shift rod as right in the middle.

I'm finding play in the mechanisms means I have to go from Forward to Reverse slightly on the control then back home to Neutral to get the Neutral safety start switch and what presses it to be centered with each other. But... it's an old boat. I can live with that as it is.

They play and the procedure you do is not so uncommon in my experience.
When the control, wires and the linkage get old is the procedure going from forward to reverse slightly and then to neutral to get the safety switch to be depressed a good way to handle the remote control.
When you get used to it it will not be a problem.
