Just changed the water pump on a 90HP 2 stroke yamaha (approx year of build later 80's) and I have somehow moved the gearbox into forward so irrespective of whether the control lever is in neutral, forward or reverse, the propeller is turning in the forward direction. How do you reset the gearcase to neutral before refitting the leg? Thanks

Same motor as mine. Drop lower unit, wrap rags around splined shifter shaft and clamp on it with Vise-Grip pliers or similar, so you can shift it without screwing up those splines. Shift it from forward to reverse and back while turning prop shaft until you find neutral, put your hand remote control(703) in the neutral position, bolt it back together. Good Luck!

If it is not changing gears when you move the shift controls the you may need to have the lower unit opened up to reset.

Hopefully you didn't pull the splined shifter shaft out of the lower unit when you dropped it down, if you did then you'll have to open lower unit to reset shifter mechanism like 99yam said. Good Luck!
