how to remove thermostat housing (with pics)?

hello,

see the pic for how my thermostat assembly looks like.



Here below another pic of how it looks like in there



I have been able to take out all the parts but the housing as marked in the picture seems to be difficult to remove. Appreciate any good suggestion on how I could try to solve this.

bosunsmate: yes correct it is a salty - well I guess i need to take it out because the ring where the cup goes over is not intact anymore - I thought I replace the housing and thermostat and gasket in one go. I tested the thermostats and they did not work properly, that would possibly explain my high idle.

Is that ring that looks damaged the washer labelled in your pic? (oring)

It probably wont explain your high idle.

What model motor is this?

OK, I have tried to show in the new picture. the ring that looks damaged is the most left part of the housing (as marked in the drawing in the original post) - hope I explain myself clear enough - you see in the newest picture on the left side some of the ring is ok, the rest is not ok anymore.

- it is a 250 johnson 1994

New Attachment doesnt open.
Yep i understand what you are saying, you are saying that its the housing thats damaged and its not an oring.
Since your thermostats were stuffed its probably heat that done that.
Is that housing metal? If so id be putting some heat into the surrounding circle to help break the salt corrosion bonds
You may need a slide hammer set up to get it out if its very stuck in

ok I tried to upload picture again. yes correctbosuns mate - the housing is damaged. I do not think the housing is metal, did not sound like that when i tapped on it with a screwdriver. Can I be sure that it is not screwed in? no threads? I just thought because of all the taps on the inside of the housing - as if you can unscrew it from the housing in a way with a special tool.

Yes pic uploaded.
I dont think they are screwed in as that would make them very hard to remove on a saltie....
Although i might be wrong and they are screwed in.
SOomeone may know that.
Are you going to try and fix it or order a replacement as that will show if it has threads?

actually i am waiting for replacement housings already, - i bought them together with the thermostats and the gaskets. hope to have them early next week.

they look like this: - so it looks they are just pushed in. the slide hammer is possibly the way to go...I may try that and see how goes.

Get a cotter pin puller, get in there and pull it out. If it breaks, don't worry as you're going to replace it any way.

tried today and pulled it out with a screw driver - was easier than expected. It is plastic so was not sitting hard. I could put the screwdriver in one of the holes and just slide it back.

new housing is in - new thermostat and gasket tomorrow, ready.

I owe you an update - after getting in the new thermostats the motor runs approx 1000 rpms when cold and after some minutes it will go own to approx 700 rpms, - so I guess changing thermostats did the trick.
