I'm trying to restore my 62' rude. I posted here since its not boat or repair related. In the past 2-3 years of use this motor was on a small boat that was in the water 6 months out of year. As a result there is a substantial amount of growth.

I started by diluting vinegar with some water and used a toothbrush to get off what I could. The top pic is what I started with......there is a spot near the top that you can see I cleaned off before the pic. The second pic is where I am at now. What else can I do to clean this up?? Have I gotten most of it and am I now looking at a sand, prime, paint adventure?? just looking for a little advice, as I know lots of you have done this many times.....this being my first motor resto.

There's a specific anti marine growth spray you can buy at most any boat dealer. Carefull with it at it is highly corrosive to skin and don't breath the vapors.

The growth must have eatin through the paint and in some areas the primer too......how necessary is it to remove the growth before I start sanding.

I wouldn't worry about it. It'll blow off with some sanding. You'll likely be grinding into pits, finding bare metal and what not to make the l/u pretty. By the time you're done that the gunk will be just a bad memory.

3M makes some real handy abrasives for this - some which fit on the end of a drill. They really take the grunt work out of it. The hard ones are fast and agressive, and the soft ones find their way around corners.

And for goodness' sake, wear a good dust mask and work out doors. That green primer has some serious health consequences.
