Hey Guys,

I have a Merc 3.0 I/O that I would like to quite down a bit, engine runs good but compartment has no noise insulation of any sorts. I researched some noise specific cancelling materials in the automotive area but pretty pricey....so I wanted to know if anyone has had success with perhaps some materials from Home Depot, Lowe's, ect....

Thanks..

I would think some 1" sheet foam would go a long way. Just don't block off air flow / ventilation.

The spray cans could also work but are messy and might absorb water over time.

I've heard GREAT things about RAAMAT BXT II...http://www.raamaudio.com
If that's too pricey then I'd just try some of the foil faced PolyIso board from Lowe's or HD and cut em to fit and Contact cement them in place.

If you put something in that's not designed for that purpose, just be sure you're not installing something that's flammable. The last thing you want to do is install something with a low flashpoint or that would add to your troubles if there were (heaven forbid) a fire.

That RAAMAT stuff WOG linked looks pretty nifty.

Ayuh,.... I lined my motorbox with several layers of closed cell sheet packagin' foam, that is usually 'bout an 1/8" thick,....

Since then, I found some(dumpster divin') of the stuff, 3/8", 1/2", 'n 3/4" for future projects,...

Staples carries some of the thinner stuff,....

That quieted it down quite abit,....
Puttin' up curtains beside the motorbox Really quieted it down, much more,...
I stitched in a layer of the foam, 'tween the vinyl panels,...

PolyIso board is flame retardant material. You might do Like bondo and go around some construction sites and get some scraps for free!!!:D I didn't realize he was a C.O.B. like me!!!!:peace:

I wonder if the wrap stuff they sell for hot water tanks would work well?
If it can be wrapped around a gas hwt, then one would think it should not be too flammable.
