I have some small gouges on the corners of the rear of my boat. They are cosmetic and I would like to repair them. How do you determine if you can use gelcoat repair kits, or if you need to go further in depth and do fiberglass repair?
I can take a couple pics tomorrow.
Thanks in advance!

if the glass has been compromised...

if its whacked....torn or even disturbed.....then do the glass as well as the gellcoat. then you know..its correct

Thanks oops!. I can just barely see a bit of glass in the worse gouge. Is it safe to assume a gel coat kit will do the trick?

Will do. I'm sure color matching will be fun for my non-artistic eye.

A few tips on color matching for ya Skargo .. wetsand and buff out your repair before you Prep it for a color match base color for your boat color.

1. Start lighter then darker for your base. Your blue right ?

2. Add Black Last !! you can mud out gel fast with black ( I have 31 flavors of pigments in my kit that is not in your kit so you can Hard swing the those primaries and secondary colors in the kit ).

3. When "dabbing" your mix on the buffed area .. let it sit for 5 min to see your color swing. When you dab it on there is Not going to be the color of your finished cure color.

4. Get some Toothpics and use them instead of the squirt it out of the vial/jar method. .. one dab at a time when you get close for such a small amount.

5. Do NOT look at your dab/match more then 10 seconds at a time .. you will "cone" your eyes. .. move your eyes to a different location in your surroundings with different colors to adjust.

6. Blur or squint your eyes a bit to give you longer looksies and you might pick up a color that you need to add.

Remember one thing .. if your just going to Gel paste patch .. It WILL fail at some point and time without doing a spot spray. .. its only a temp fix. .. its not a perm fix.

Hope this helps you Skargo :) ..

I have some minor spider cracks on mine, none on the hull or transom, just a few on the top cap/gunwale areas like where cleats are. I guess it's common on old boats...
