how to get rid of scum on aluminum boats

Hey guys, i have a 22' aluminum north river boat that has some scum marks from being in the water for a few months. It is now out of the water and still has the scum marks after i tried to wash it off, and have it detailed off. Is there any ideas of what i can use to get it off. Thanks.

what kind of scum marks?

I have used Kaboom bathroom cleaner on an aluminum boat that had high amounts of lime deposits on it. Kaboom has a mild acid in it

Most toilet bowl cleaners have oxalic acid ace their active ingredient and this works well to remove scum. Sno-Bol or The Works are two that come to mind.

oxalic acid is good for rust ( iron oxide ). Works Great for rust when OA is HOT ..

For scum..use another acid .. on and off works well.

use the safety measures ...

my neighbor uses toonbrite on his pontoons after each season and their nasty but clean right up with it, bass pro sells it

I use the Purple Power Cleaner(Walmart $4.87/gallon) strong detergent on my aluminum canoe to remove and brighten the metal. Spray or brush it on, let it foam some, rinse it off...good stuff for lots of cleaning...just wear rubber gloves so it don't eat your hide off!

the scum marks are a yellowish scum and is constant throughout the bottom of the boat. the detailer guy used his best cleaning stuff and it didnt do anything.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site but did experience this problem with my 20' toon after sitting in the Ouachita for several months. The nasty brown river scum was disgusting, to say the least. I used Dawn, Dishwashing Liquid, on the toons and the motor and the scum came off without a problem. I was impressed, to say the least.

hi guys iknow its late but i get about the worst scum to get off here in pa on the sckhuykill river mine sits in all year ive tried all kinds of products the best thing i found is attwood hull cleaner sold at walmart for $8 or $9 its nast stuuf but it work i just spray on with small pump srayer and spay with hose and mine comes up bright white every time just thought i post case anyone is looking at at this thread

i used sos pads on an 1985 model, it turned out great, and polished it afterwards, it came out looking like a new quarter.
