How to do a Transom Repair or Replacement?

Here is a link to a project boat that I just bought. I was wondering if anyone knew of any links that would direct me to information about transom repair or replacement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will post some pics as the process gets going.

hit the search button and type transom replacement, youll find many different threads to read, and while your at it you might as well type stringer replacement, and deck replacement as well, just got a feeling you doin them all from the looks of where it was, good luck, D

Follow the above advice, and i agree...looks like a total hull gutting restoration to me.

Any of the full resto threads will show you how to replace everything in your boat, and each thread often has a different method used, while still following the basic set of guidelines.

Welcome to iboats. Check out the completed projects forum to get an idea of whats ahead of you. You might want to get the motor checked out first to see if it's any good. Also go to the Non boating technical topics forum for proper instructions on how to post pics. Resize them to 640x480 and you will have more luck getting reply's. Most guys here won't klik on thumbnail pics to get the full size,just post them full size in your thread.

I would like to do the deck with bamboo. There is a place here in Savannah that can cut custom shaped pieces whatever size you need. They have these huge sheets of bamboo. I would imagine it would need lots of clear coat to protect it from the water. Any suggestions or comments about that? Also, how long do you think it would take me to just get the boat in the water if I spend two hours a day on the boat? I know it will take a lot longer to make it look nice on the inside, but I'm just curious as to getting the boat in the water.

That article is a hack job and obviously he never did real boat work. Latex exterior paint and silicone....... formula for disaster

bamboo sucks water doesnt it???????....

if it does.....dont use it. dont re invent the wheel. and dont over think what you are going to do.

2 hrs a day...? = over 100 days......but that will be about a year shy.
@ 2 hrs a day it will take 2 weeks just to gut it.

it takes your head about an hour to get in the game after a small layoff.
expect and plan to do a few 8 hour days or it will take forever.

I'm not reinventing the wheel. I just want my boat to be unique and look good. What would you suggest?

I find it hard to believe that it would take me two weeks to gut it out, and I will definitely be putting in some 8 hour days if I am not working.

You may be surprised but it will take 2 weeks if you only invest 2 hours per day. Take it from the people on here that have done it

Well I didn't think I needed to do a full gut out, but I suppose I would want to if I want it to look nice. Being new at this, any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

its the 2 hrs a day that will take weeks to gut it.

a pro can gut a boat to hull in 10 hrs........so at 2 hrs a day.....thats a week.

someone that has not done it before it will take as much as 3 times that number.

please understand....we/i an not trying to dissuade you....we want to you suceed !

as far as the bamboo.....it would really look good...however ther are other considerations.....like how well does the wood take a screw?....take cedar for example....it has a natural oil that prevents rot. so i would be a great wood for boat building...right?.....
nope !....it cant hold a screw...so it is a bad choice for boat building.

bamboo will be a sponge to water....so again...it is not the best choice for this application.

if you want a unique boat....(like i did) think of how you want to use the boat.....and build it for that purpose.

there are many unique features and items that can really add to a boat....just think of somthing to make the boat your own......but ask here first for choice of materials....that way we we can save you re doing this boat in 6 months !

The ad for the boat said it was a project boat that needed a floor and transom. IMO, that right there means the cap comes off and the boat gets gutted right down to the hull. I did the same to the Sea Ray in my avatar last year. Whatever bad stuff you see on the surface will likely be much much worse once you start digging into it. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Once again welcome to iboats!!
There is so much info on here I don't think anyone could read through it all...ever....
As for your restoration, I would suggest you completely remove everything. this involves removing the cap of the boat, and then you begin cutting out the deck, then the stringers, then the transom. Once that is done you begin the rebuild process!
Just take some time to read through some threads here on iboats. look for threads that have a red envelope beside them (this means they are popular among members and generally means there will be lots of info).
