My g/f loves dogs and grew up with a black lab and I want to try to convince her to buy into the idea of getting a dog (prefer a lab). We got two cats, but they aren't so great when it comes to doing activities. Want a dog for jogging, cross-country skiing, going on the boat and overall companionship. I like my cats and they are great for hanging out, but if my cat didn't ADD on us when we go for walks and we have to go very slow for him. Any suggestions?

When we had our Chow Chow he would run you right into the ground.
Once he got outside it was like owning a jet dog.
I couldn't keep Midnight out of the lake when we were there.
Plus He was very protective of his family as in Denise & I. :)
We would have to tell him its OK and all was fine with strangers or with whoever.

RIP Midnight.

Check for the local rescue shelter and just go to "visit" ;) Bring a few biscuits and visit the orphans. That may be enough to help seed your request.

I have 2 labs (1 from a breeder and the other was a shelter adoption both pure bread) and 3 cats ........ Lot's of responsibility ....... can not do overnights w/o lot's of planning and a sitter.

I'm with Bob VT... a visit with her to the animal shelter will do the trick. You'll want to scope it it out first and make sure there are lots of big brown eyes looking back at you/her. I hate going there because it is soooo hard to leave without someone. But I do go when it's replacement time.

I agree with the others, get a rescue! I have 2 rescued mix breeds and it is a great felling to give a dog a good home. Take her to a rescue or shelter to look at some pups. If you find one you like and go home to think it over, bring some pictures home and leave them around the house in strategic places. When she opens her purse, pic of the pup! When she opens the fridge, pic of the pup! When she opens the closet, pic of the pup! You get the idea, works every time. I'm sure you can find a nice Lab at a shelter or rescue. Good luck!

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/schipperke.htm

How could you say no to a dog that was bred to be on a boat.

The Schipperke was bred in Flanders by a canal boat captain named Renssens. They were descended from a 40 pound (18 kg.) black sheepdog, known as the Leauvenaar, which is the same sheep-herding stock that the black Belgian Sheepdog descended from. The Schipperke was bred smaller and smaller and eventually became a different breed entirely. The dogs became a favorite choice to guard canal barges in Belgium. The breed was used for herding livestock, hunting game, or simply guarding his domain. In Flemish the word "schip" means boat, hence where they got their name "Schipperke". They earned the nickname "Little Captain" and "Little Skipper", because the dogs were the "ratters", a very important function on a canal barge, and also usually the captain's dog. The breed became very popular in Belgian households by the late 1800's. It first appeared at a dog show in 1880. From that point on it was exported throughout the world. The Schipperke do very well on boats and people often get this breed to come along with them on boating and fishing trips. It makes a great guard dog when the boat anchors for the night, alerting of anything out of the ordinary and the dog thoroughly enjoys its trip. The Schipperke was recognized by the AKC in 1904.

+1 on the big brown eyes and puppy kisses...that will melt her heart...especially if she already is a dog lover.

Re: How to convince my g/f to get a pooch?

Nice suggestions, but she is to darn practical she loves them and all but she thinks of all the work and less of the reward. We were at a pet store today that allows shelters to come in, they had German shepards, huskies, labs and some mix. But she could still see past those big brown eyes that say i love you. She wants her dad to get a dog, so she can play with it. She likes keeping things simple and low maintenance she does most of the stuff for the cats I pay for them. She does most of the maintenance, while I am more of disaster recovery and projects. I help with maintenance and mow the yard. We also split cooking and dishes. I even hang up my own clothes. She wants one but not for a while. She is worried about grad school.

Re: How to convince my g/f to get a pooch?

My wife and I had a lab for 13years. She died last summer one month before she turned 14. Right before Christmas I found a place that was selling Lab/Dane mix. The 5 +year old dogs they had same mix were160-180 pounds. They are very very smart and loyal.

Or instead of kids. My other half and I have our five dogs and we are perfectly happy. Granted she is a teacher and gets her fill of children quickly on a daily basis. Besides it is nice to be the cool aunt and uncle who have all the cool toys. Boat, motorcycle, etc.

Re: How to convince my g/f to get a pooch?

We have a full size collie, which is a VERY LOVEABLE dog. He likes alot of attention. We have a Bassett Hound. What else is there to say, he's very cool. You can do abou anything with him. He's just lazy, and loveable. AND my wife just got a miniature Schnauzer. He's very active !!! He yaps quite a bit, which we are working on.

The Bassett couldn't care less if he goes on the boat or not. He will, BUT it's not the highlight of his life.

The Collie, he don't mind going, and sits up front in the boat proudly !! (He's also a very watchful dog over the family).

The Schnauzer, is only 8 months old. He's very inquisitive, affectionate. He has never seen the inside of the boat, ......... yet. A very cool pup !!!!!

Our dogs are our "babies", and they know it !!!

Please tell me the two cats are not female also.If so this is a conspiracy to take all of your manhood away!A dog, male or female will crush the plan.Run,Run fast!Find a woman with a dog. She'll be glad to have another if you want one yourself.Seriously If you have two cats, they will be pissed to share "Their" house w the dog.Youve got to get rid of them first:facepalm:

Find another G/F:eek::eek:.....................OK just kidding.:p:p Sounds more like a timing issue to me. If Grad school is her objective she may see a dog a time consuming endeavor.

I think I might let her win this battle...for now. I don't want her to hate me or a dog that I get so I will ask her every so often and maybe one day she might change her mind.
