Re: how to build a steering console

A friend installed a nice console made out of mahogany on his 13' BW when he refurbished the boat. Attached is a pic of that boat w/ console. BTW - the boat is about 30 years old. The boat was in pretty rough shape and did an amazing job refurbishing it as it looks better than new!

Re: how to build a steering console

I asked him what he used on the floor and he believes it is called "sea-grip" or something like that. If you need the vendor name he said he could look through his reciepts. That pic was taken right after he got finished with the restoration, which was about 3-4 years ago. The floor pads still function well, but now they have a tinge from mold which he said is hard to get rid of.

This boat was restored to be a cool looking run-about, and not as a working fishing boat. I think if I was to build a console on a small boat to be used for fishing I'd be inclined to use marine plywood as was mentioned above.

Re: how to build a steering console

there are lots of ways you can build it, center or side....

as pictured above, mahogany and teak, traditional boat building materials are great to use and have super charm and charector, and if taken care of, will last years

the plywood route is allways a easy choice, standard exterior grade, is the best and easyest for what you want to do, marine grade is expencive, hard to find, and not much different than ext.

if you are worring about it rotting, just give the whole thing a layer of fiberglass.

the last way, is custom, fiber glass fabrication, really easy to do, and roughly a little bit more cost than straight plywood, gell coat can be added or built right in to the mold.........this is a pic of one done that incluced a subwoofer

the completed pic is at the bottom of post #3

bear in mind that one was professionally built, but your results can be very simmelar......

those are your three choices, we can walk you thru any of them.

which one do you like?

Marcq - I will gladly ask him in two weeks...he and his family left for Germany this morning. In the mean time I'll poke around on the internet to see if can find the vendor on-line. I think he bought it through a shop that has a lot of Boston Whaler rebuild stuff. Hope this works for you.
