To do vacuum and pressure with Stevens Instruments you need two separate rigs. It has been suggested that a Mityvac would work for both pressure and vac testing.

Has anyone found off the shelf hoses and fittings to make this work? Stevens sells an adapter for small OMC outboards (34A, $4.70) which presumably screws into the lower unit drain hole. Stevens also sells a 33" hose that fits their adapter (34-025, $4.08)

The trick is how to adapt this hose to the mityvac. Any suggestions for the correct adapter? Do I need a pressure and or vacuum check valve? (part is listed, not sure what it does.)

help for newbie appreciated

What adaptation is needed to

you could use the fitting from a gear lube pump. Might need an oring for a really good seal

the mityvac MV8500 is both a pressure and vacuum pump < tooltopia is listing it for ~$55 > and as matt167 suggest the fitting and hose from a gear lube pump ~$10 at walmart works. One of the fittings included with the 8500 may also work, idk.

I have only used a few of the mityvacs, I find the mityvac pump will not hold the vacuum or pressure.

It might be cheaper to take it to a dlr and have him pressure and vacuum check it.

I had some small diameter stainless steel tubing laying around, so I drilled a hole in an old drain plug that didn't have the magnet and inserted the tubing using some Loctite for cylindrical parts to seal it, I then used some clear vinyl tubing and some fuel line tie wraps to connect the stainless tubing on the test plug to one of the adapters that came with the Mityvac. It would hold pressure and vacuum overnight which was good enough for me. You might be able to find similar tubing at McMaster Carr.

If you haven't purchased these items yet and plan on doing this once, I would take boobie's suggestion and get it checked at a shop.

If you or anyone would like I can post a photo of mine and show how its made all stuff can be bought at your local hardware store for cheap. mine can work of a bicycle pump or air compressor,

Post it up. I always like to see what solutions others have found. It sounds like you are only doing a pressure test. Is that the case?

I came up with a solution. To get separate vacuum pumps w gauges from Stevens Instruments is a couple of hundred bucks. So, I bought the mightyvac and from stevens I got their hose and fittings that mate up to the Johnson/Evinrude drain hole.

When everything arrives I will report back
