I gotta say, Peter, I really like your idea of school. We should give that a try. As far as the name "Beer Can Island," the geographical name is Pine Key. Some of the local rednecks coined the phrase, as well as Party Island. You would be surprised how many different Beer Can Islands pop up on a Google search. One in Tampa, Anna Maria Island, Miami, and I think one in North Carolina.

Shane, I have a chart that calls it "Picnic Island". From what I have learned, it is a man made island that was created to give the boaters a place to go, leaving the larger islands off limits so the birds (real wildlife) would not be messed with.

The island seems to attract people from all walks of life, not just beer chugging jerks who give boaters a bad name. I heard there were a lot of problems some years ago, but I have never seen any trouble anytime I was there. I see a lot of people with similar interests getting out and enjoying 2 cool things: boating and the beach! Some even camp there overnight. The people tend to self police, and the past 2 times I went there, there was both Coast Guard and Hillsborough Sheriff patrol boats cruising around.

At some point, someone brought chickens out there, and they now live (and breed) there wild. Kind of strange seeing them running around.

Picnic Island is on the west side of Macdill AFB. You are right, there are many people that visit this island. I have met some very nice religious people, many families with small children, college students (who tend to leave all their trash in the woods on the island, you do have the drunk crowd, and there are also people out there to just fish. I must say, I have not had much luck fishing there, other than one tiny blacktip shark. The one thing that really bugs me the most is when people just leave trash strewn all about one of the few places that the public can still visit.

The island directly to the north of Beer Can is a bird sanctuary, as well as the peninsula to the northeast of this bird sanctuary. There is also a small island right next to the power plant, and the public is not allowed there either.

We are headed to Tampa in a few weeks. My in laws have a place on Swann Ave in South Tampa. We will be boating with the family including our two toddler sons. Need to find an isalnd for the kids to get off and run around and play. How do I find Pine Key (beer can island) or picnic island. We usually use the ramp on gandy. Is there a better ramp to use to get to these places? Thanks!

Look at the bright side, they could have brought a fresh batch of lutefisk out there instead and opened the lid

Nandy's right it woud be time for "schooling"
1) Yell "Hey Dumb@7_7_ get over here NOW! "
2) Help the dimwitt into the water - as politely as required.
3) Ask dimwitt to count the amount of anchor lines he severed while safely supporting his head just below the surface.....remember most people can hold their breath for 3 minutes ; so if he had a few and forgets to breath , be nice and help him back up.:D
4) tell him the guys don't feel like swimming now ; so retrieve all the anchors and return them to the rightfull owners while the teachers help them selves to a few "courtisy " beverages from his cooler . ( be nice and return the empties to his boat -Don't wanna be acused of stealin' his empties )
5) help him back to his boat -newly schooled an full o'pride .
6) hail the authorities - give his reg # an report a drunkin' fool with a boat full of empties.
class dismissed. peter

love it! some people only learn by hands on.lol around here alot of us go to crystal bay. on long weekend it looks like a mall parking lot hundreds of boats. they did a story of it in the local paper a few years back. i bought my new boat the end of last year and took my son for his first boat ride. we anchored off the side of a island, getting ready to swim i see a ski boat coming down the water. keep in mind water way is 150 yards or so wide and 15 or so feet deep all the way across. this boat was heading right towards us. he had to have seen us, as he got closer he turned a skipped across the back of the boat as to create a wave for his wake boarder to jump a croos the back of my boat.as they passed and i grab my kid and jumped off the swim platform into the boat the driver waved to us with a smile. come on now the channel is plenty wide enough, no need at all just out to tick people off needless to say the waves slammed the boat around and my son wanted to go home. hopefully this year will be a better expirence for him. as for that boater i can only hope what goes around comes around!

I think your experience would have required a face to face from me, shore patrol, and some local jailers soon there after.....

I have a simple philosophy, Do not jeopardize the safety of my family, specifically my children. It will not end well for you.

You don't want to be driving by the local Lutheran church on the night they have their annual Lutefisk dinner!!

i hate when i go fishing and out of the whole lake there has to be some dumb a** jet skiier that has to ride 20 foot from my boat. problem with jet skiis is i cant swamp them with my boat they really want the waves unlike the other 15-19 foot boats that i could swamp[dont because i am a nice person] just angers me when people dont have courtisy to drive there rig around me but have to drive next to me

I have no doubt mrchev, and I didn't mean to imply differently, I would have loved to have been there to help you deliver some swift discipline. We have small lakes here in my area of Colorado, and being near Denver they get pretty packed, we try to avoid them but inevitably we go for those half day on the water type RX, typically just me and the wife go and anchor in the no wake zone, If the kids show interest in going we go to a lake a couple hours away where there is not such density of users but you know how it is eventually even the best lake in the world will have at least one lake idiot who has left his village. I have never been in your specific situation but I am sure the other driver is lucky you chose the water, I hope your son forgets that situation quickly.

You have the solution right there in your bait bucket.

thanks much appreciated. I think he has forgotten, he was helping me to get the boat ready for the water and was pretty excited, brought his fishing pole he got for Christmas on board, and keeps asking when it going in the water.so i think he will survive. it a shame that people like that, you always remember. Ive met a lot of great people on the water over the years, and being a border water way, i have met people from Ohio, Michigan,Pennsylvania,New york, and local Canadians. and that is why i love the boating experience to met great people. but every now and again you run into these inconsiderate ones and they remind you to always be considerate to the fellow boaters and not ruin their day. i am a believer in what goes around comes around.

Never been to "Beer Can Island", but I know where it is. We've got our own on the coast called "Anclote Island", but it's really just a sand bar. I'll go by there Dec-Apr, but usually avoid it the summer months. Especially holiday weekends, because all the liquid heroes are out then. One thing good about living on the Gulf side is if there's too much traffic, just keep moving because there's lots of water.

It's pretty easy and fun to overtake a wake boat with a bass boat, and sink it with your roost.

Don't mess with an old redneck in a bass boat.

Been there, done that.:D
