Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......

Still working out the details of the insurance, but I know I'm going to get screwed on this one. I have never had anything like this happen in my 20+ years of trailering boats, camp trailers, dirtbikes, and ATVs. We rolled 30mi away from our family cabin, and Yellowstone will have to wait until next year. I think I'll be looking for a tandem axle trailer for the next boat.

What hurts the most is that this is the first playtoy that the entire family enjoyed, and not just another toy for me. I've spent countless $$$ trying to find something for everyone, so this one is especially hurtfull. Not a good way to get a bigger boat, but atleast I know that whatever I bring home next will be hit with the family. She's pretty bitter over this, and blaming me 100%, but I don't give a damn about what she thinks anymore. I'm going to replace it because of the kids, not her. Thanks to all the well-wishers and thoughts of encouragement. I know we'll get through this, but it might take some time. I'm already window shopping!

Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......

I work a 7-on/7-off schedule, so every other week is a vacation for me. I moonlight at other facilities during my off weeks, so I can work as much or as little as I want to. I have no other choice but to make light of the situation. Besides, its only money, right?

started a nice little brush fire, too. you did some good on that one. grass will grow back real lush. you're helping the circle of life and reducing the odds of another fire there...good job! lol

if you can find a way to skinny that list down to fit a t-shirt, you might be in business.

good job on keeping your chin up!

Well, I could have added the ER visit to the list, but thought that might be a little too much for the casual reader. Funny thing is that the ER trip had nothing to do with the accident, but everything to do with her virus and squirts. I'm still chuckling over that one!

I only need one instruction to guarantee a HORRIBLE vacation:

Take my mother-in-law.

But yours sounds like that was included in there.

i always ask for the inlaw family to meet us at the destination, sorry for the loss. looks like a bigger and nicer boat in the future. (sorry if the boat thing was to early.)

Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......UPDATE!

Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......UPDATE!

Well, all wasn't a complete washout with the insurance company. My auto policy wouldn't cover anything. They avoided the $600 wrecker/clean-up costs, wouldn't touch the boat, and won't consider the trailer because I didn't have it included on my truck's policy as a rider. However, my home owner's insurance is willing to pick up the loss of personal property, so all of our groceries/gas that I have receipts for, plus the damaged luggage/clothes/jewerly/make-up, and all of our water toys were covered, minus a $1000 deductable. My home policy allows for a maximum of $1500 for anything marine related (boats, trailers, PWC, outboards). So in the end, they mailed me a check for a little over $2600. I'm still out a couple thousand, but its better than nothing!

Shoot, they contacted me again and stated that a second check was sent out today to cover "additional losses" for another $800. I didn't think that I'd get anything, so this is all a big bonus in my book!

Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......UPDATE!

I'm not going to reread the whole thread right now so correct me if I'm wrong.

By your own words you made a big expenditure for the "happiness" of the family. But....you did not spend a few hundred bucks on full coverage for the boat and trailer? If this is correct I hope you just learned a hard but valuable lesson.

Re: How NOT to have a good vacation......UPDATE!

You're right. I had incorrectly assumed that my auto policy would cover what I was towing. Apparently, my line of thinking was not too far out of line because the local Sherrif and several other boat owners had the same thought. Indeed, I'm finding out the hard way. Until this unfortunate event, I had no clue that boat insurance existed. I know now!

Just read this. So sorry for everything that happened. Glad everyone is OK.
Agree completely with the insurance thing. You need to know specifically what is covered and what is not. Then adjust your coverage to suit your needs. Too many people go for cheap and don't realise that the coverage is well less than they expected.
All the best for the future.

Now that we are actually being covered for our losses, she has eased up. I'm not sure how soon she'll want to go shopping for another boat, but that's another bridge to cross.

Glad everyone is OK, don't worry I have also assumed that insurance would cover everything. My house got flooded last year with 88k in damage, found out that flood insurance doesn't cover personal property unless you have an additional policy...
