How much paint/primer to buy?

I know this is a vague question, since it depends on how many coats you apply, how you mix, ect.

Here is my situation. I am ready for paint in 2 days, however I dont want to order a ton of extra paint.

Boat: 1972 Startcraft SS 16'
Painting Inside and Out.

Will be using a spray gun.

So my questions are as follows.

1) How many spray cans of Self Etching Primer? I will use this stuff out of the can.
2) How much clean metal primer?
3) How much paint?

I realize you cannot give me a definitive answer. But just your recommendation based on personal experience would be great.

Also, is my painting method good in your opinion?

Aluminum is completely bare.

1 Coat of Dupli-Color Self Etching Primer
2 Coats of Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer
X Coats of my chosen color, which has yet to be chosen.

Also, I guess question number 4.

Should I use 2 different paints for above water and below? The boat will not be docked, it will be launched each use.

*** I have looked up the mixing ratios, for spraying, however any further imput will be appreciated so I can see what different people do to try and get a better understanding of what will work for me,

Re: How much paint/primer to buy?

Are you talking about spraying ALL of your paint from Spray Cans???
NOTE: It's a FORUM recommendation that you keep your Posts all in one thread. Makes it easier for everyone to understand what is going on with your project.

Normally you can take the length and width and go to a site like home depot and it can tell you approx how much paint it will take.

I will use self etching primer from the can.

The rest I will let the compressor take it away

Re: How much paint/primer to buy?

Just a thought but I am pretty sure it would be more economical to purchase a gallon of self etching primer and hardener to spray with the gun (is it an hvlp?) and skip or limit the need for a second primer than to run short on your purchase of a case of cans.

Are you planning on using a two part epoxy or urethane paint? If not you should be.

If so make sure your primers are suitable for use underneath it. It would be a mess if you used the wrong substrate/primer and the paint did not get along with the primers, and you end up having to either live with it lifting or bubbling etc or end up stripping the whole thing.

I do not buy into the idea of having to use the same brand products, but you do have to be sure they are compatible.

Good luck it is a lot of fun and a great feeling doing stuff like this yourself!

Ayuh,... Get yerself a 1/2 gallon of Rustoleum etchin' primer, 'n 1/2 gallon of which ever colors of Rustoleum industrial enamel ya wanta use...

Then go to town...

The Rustoleum will hold up very well, both above, 'n below the waterline...

Btw,.... You should stick with the Same manufacturer for ALL of the paints needed to do the job...
That way, ya don't need to worry 'bout Compatibility issues...

Check out Page #10 in my "My Flamingo" resto thread. It has all the info you need on how to prep and shoot Rustoleum paint.
