Meant2be,I'm guessing your going to find some missing metal on one of your gears when you get carrier out and get into lower unit.Sounds like your splines are getting spent and driveshaft may even have a twist in it causing additional binding .Parting may well have soon followed.I'm sure whatever it was that the lower unit encounterd transmitted a significant amount of torque on the drive components. The weak link is the driveshaft.

Let the crying begin. :(

I finally got an 8" puller (Advanced Auto) and still had to twist the carrier so I could grab the external bolt ears (claws too big to fit down into housing).

I first saw that the reverse gear was missing a single tooth. I figured, okay I need to replace that, but then....

I looked up in the housing and could see that the forward gear was pretty ugly. There was at least 5 or 6 teeth damaged. It looked great compared to the pinion gear    Its' lunch had been eaten. Major damage, two teeth gone and the others chewed up.

I am now past the penny and in for the pound! Is there a way to unscrew the drive shaft bearing retainer without the "special" tool mentioned in the manual? Oh, by the way, WHAT A FOUL SMELL! They must of worked on making the lube smell like that.

Wife's going to love me. I am doing this in my office in the house. Laid everything on a plastic shower curtain.

Meant2be,I have no idea what the new gear sets ,bearings, and seals will cost to do your lowerunit rebuild but you can get a rebuilt lower unit for your motor for around $1100 with a warranty.

Yes, I saw that. What is meant by the core? Does everything come with it, including the drive shaft?

They want your old core as exchange. If you don't have it I believe there is a core charge.I believe the driveshaft is part of the rebuilt unit.

Insurance comes to rescue! I talked with my insurance agent and he said that the purchase of a rebuilt L/U will be covered up to 1750.00.

If this isn't a good case for buying insurance, I don't know what is. Cost me 90.00 annually.

Everyone was great with the advice, especially ob. Thanks :D
