Hi Folks...

please forgive what must be an elementary question for you all.

I am building a lightweight 14ft skiff of my own design that will be powered by an outboard. The boat does not need to plane, but needs to have sufficient power to fight against strong currents and chop.

Can anyone offer advice, or point me in the right direction to figure out what type of outboard, and how much power I need?

Much obliged.

Jaymz

It depends of a lot of things such as hull shape and weight. I'd say 8-9.9 hp.
Do you have a picture?

Hello.
When you say lightweight you should have a relatively light engine as well. That would probably leave the heavier four stroke engines out.
When you say skiff it makes me imagine a relatively long and narrow flat bottom with room enough to be a four oar boat. If that is correct you are very right in not wanting her to plane.
Bear is right in the ball park with a 9.9.
You should check out service availability and make your choice accordingly.

You'll also have to notify your State Boating Law administrator to get a HIN (hull identification number).
Also go to: http://www.uscg.mil/d8/mso/louisville/download.htm.

There you'll find a document called 'Standards For Backyard Boat Builders'. It will explain powering etc.

c/6

Hooty
