12 poles, set your tach on position 6.

just wanted to through this out there, this is true for most tachs. It's always best to consult bothe the tach manufacturers suggested setting and the motor manufacturer. I have seen some tachs that don't have a setting for 6 but rather 5.

All tachs I've seen in the last 25 yrs plus have had 6 on them. What tachs are you talking about???

I have run across 3 that I can remember that had a 1, 3, 5 selection on them Boobie. Oddly enough all 3 looked like an older Stewart Warner, but they were not. I have one here in a box of misc. stuff that I will have to dig out. I was a bit baffled when I saw them and figured they must have been out of something else, but all 3 were in boats.

If they were Stewart Warner they are really old. Anything is possible with them. Thanks for the info. They could have been used on 4 stroke inboards.

what exactly is a POLE ...is that same as pulses????

and what makes one motor have a different number than another motor?

thanks

The number of poles are the number of north/south magnetic fields within the stator, and the pulse refers to the number of pulses those fields will generate in one revolution.

Most outboards have 12 poles, alternating positive and negative current. Pulses refer to just the positive poles' output which is read by a tach. I have had motors with 12 poles (6P) and 10 poles (5P).

how does that TERM pulse relate to a pulse line that is connected to a fuel pump?????is the PULSE from the poles related to the PULSE that works off vacumn to activate a fuel pump??

thanks

Definition of Pulse

a. A brief sudden change in a normally constant quantity: a pulse of current; a pulse of radiation, a pulse of pressure.
b. Any of a series of intermittent occurrences characterized by a brief sudden change in a quantity.

Bob the pulse from the magnetic field of the stator is an electrical pulse, the "pulses" as people call them on vacuum operated fuel pumps are unrelated.

I believe the VRO compares vacuum pulses with tacho pulses and sets of the alarm if they get out of sync. The frequency of a no oil alarm will rise & fall with engine RPM.

The only reason you have a tach lead going to the vro is it tells the vro electronics that the mtr is running.

I disagree boobie but I'm sure someone will straighten one of us out.

I could elaborate on this but I want to see some other comments.

Why is a tach wire going to the vro ?? Read above.
