Just wondering if you would mind sharing if you go off shore, how far you go off shore and what you do it in.

I normally take my 21 footer out 3-5 miles, during the period May-Sept. Striper/blues are closer, so 1-3 mi offshore between oct and Jan.

At home, if the fish are in close, the Hot Dog and the Ham Bone are 30-35 miles out. If the fish are out in the canyons, your looking at 50+ miles.

I'll run to the HD and HB w/o a thought in my Grady. I'll run to the canyons with a buddy boat, but are a lot more comfortable in a larger boat. The last time we went out we took a 25' Hydra-Sport Vector.

Running from Hatteras or Morehead is a lot easier. You can get into Tuna and Bill fish within sight of land and thus a less seaworthy boat is required.

In Florida, I had a 21' Angler CC. I would routinely run 13-15 miles out alone.

Re: How many people go off shore?

distance from shore is just one factor in coastal/big water boating.
Often when you get far out the water is smoother; you trade chop for swells.
I may be 15 miles from "shore" at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at the bridge tunnel and it's a washing machine; the bridge being there is not a safety haven.
But running through the barrier island/outer banks inlets can be a very tricky venture, far more dangerous than anything you'll see offshore. And it changes radically with the tide so a smoth out can be a bone-crusher returning, with weather having nothing to do with it.
Going far out exposes you to two primary concerns: a break-down (or worse, sinking) with limited to no communications back to shore, or adverse weather changes where it gets worse faster than you can make it to shelter. Note: shore is not shelter and is often worse than open water.
So you need a seaworthy dependable boat, one that can handle rough conditions you wouldn't go out in, and preferably some means of rescue, includnig a buddy boat as mentioned. Going to popular off-shore grounds on a nice calm Saturday in July is not the same as a breezy Tuesday in November.

Business or pleasure?

I am an ROV pilot (ROV = underwater robot) in the oil and gas industry. In some pretty big boats I've been a LONG way offshore... :D

In my own boat, the furthest is 45 nautical miles. We were diving and I found a nice little lump that came up to 35 feet, but it was a 7 hour tow to get to the beach, then 45nm out.... Regularly do 30nm chasing dolphin fish (mahi-mahi/dorado)... Or diving at an island group called the Houtman-Abrolhos... (look at about 28?24mins S 113?43mins E).... We usually sleep the night over at the islands when we go.... I do regular runs locally to about 15nm diving for lobsters....

It looks like the owners of boats, docks, and homes along shore will not be happy to see them return..

In the summer its a madhouse. I have no clue why these guys have these on the river/chain besides they can. Its not big or deep enough and sucks for everyone but them.

That's an excellent point, HC. We Long Islanders in the Great South Bay are 'locked in' by the barrier beaches, with 3 major inlets between the bay and ocean. I ran the inlets several times in my 21' ProLine. It was better suited to it than my Four Winns is. I've taken her offshore too, but wouldn't want to be out there if the inlets got snotty. It could be a pretty scary ride back.

Re: How many people go off shore?

there are a couple of guys here who regularly go 30+ miles offshore in jet skis but they are pros, know their stuff and have the right equipment. Check out Jet Ski Brian. You'll be amazed. He's been on national TV shows, too

The farthest I've been offshore is around 200 miles. This was between New Orleans, LA and Ft Myers FL. Traveling thru The Bahamas and the Carib we are usually much less than that between Islands. I did motor to The Bahamas in an 18footer. 60 miles in a boat called "SASTO" SomeAreSickerThanOthers.

Re: How many people go off shore?

… so, what we should really be asking isn't "how many people go off shore," but rather "how many of you make it back?"
