Get a "baseline" temperature for each, then later you will know if you have a problem. My non-braking hubs run just a few degrees above ambient temperature. My brake drums (I can measure through the spokes of the wheels with the IR thermometer) run about 150 degrees after driving in traffic. Hubs on these axles will be about 120 degrees or so. For highway driving with little braking, the drums and hubs will run cooler. If I measure the temperature of the tires, it's just to compare them with each other. Temps will vary with ambient temperature and distance and speed.

Most important is that everything matches within a few degrees from side to side. If it doesn't there's a problem.

BTW: Check tire pressure before each trip, tires should be at the maximum pressure marked on the sidewall when the tires are cold (ambient temperature).
What is the point of checking the tyre/assembly temperatures if you don't know the correct running temp, or do the people with 'infared thermometers' have the knowledge?
...........
With the higher pressure they will flex less and heat up less. Also there will be less tendency for the trailer to sway.Originally posted by gonefishie:
so what if the tire pressure is lower than what recommended on the tire wall? I checked mine and they are significantly lower but the tires doesn't look flat and very normal. I think the recommended pressure is around 50 psi and my tires pressure is only around 35 cold. They are 13" on a 2500 lbs boat/trailer combine weight. They do get hot lately enough that I can smell the rubber when standing next to the boat but not too hot to touch. The hub and wheel are cool.
Now that is amazing! But how do you back it up?
You would have to couter-act the trailer turning the opposite way, then the one behind it, doing the opposite, then the one behind it, doing the opposite, then the one behind that, doing the opposite, then the one behind that, doing the opposite, then the one behind that doing the opposite.
Crazy!Originally posted by BoatBuoy:
Australian Road Train. I count 110 tires.
I lightly "touch" mine . . .Originally posted by b.gagnon:
I always give the hub a grab.
