How long does a rebuild take?

I was just wondering this morning, how much time I have in my boat projects. I don't have a clue, has anyone kept track of how many hours they have in their build?

Arch - tracking the time and money is too depressing. :blue: But after the splash, as you know, it's all :D's.

I've only run across a very few re-dos where time and costs where recorded.

history has shown me its about 4-5 times the time, and about 2-3 times the cost you initially planned on.

lol that is about right Scott....I don't even really think about cost, it is what it is. What made me think about how long it takes was watching a guy build a teardrop trailer, took 250 hours according to his video. Time on a boat build really doesn't matter to me, its time I enjoy, but I never thought of keeping track of it,

This is actually quite funny. I do remember me thinking (yea right) when I pulled my little tri hull boat into the back yard, that I would be finished in a few months. That was over two years ago... Money, if either time or money is seriously important to you, forget boat projects then. In other words, if you don't like long dirty smelly work, then forget rebuilding any boat... I think I like it though...I think...

Interesting...I was thinking about this a couple weeks ago, as I am coming up on 2 years with the GT. rough figuring: 2 day a week spent doing something with the boat. maybe it actual work or research for the next step. Figure 8 hours a day on those 2 days...x 104 weeks= 1664 hours. Now do not apply shop rates to that number.....

I stopped saving receipts, rough number in my head...between 5 and 7k.

It took a year and a half to splash the MFG .. Got a jar full of receipts .. Afraid to add it all up or the time spent ... With the fish I've caught and the time out cruising and having fun there's no doubt it was worth the effort ..

I spent about 200hrs over 6 months and $1500 + or + $300 dollars. but I didn't do a rebuild... I was just fixing a "soft spot" on the deck... and everything around it and under it.

I think if you had 2 guys, working Mon-Fri, 9-5, with all supplies on hand, it could easily be measured in months, not years, but as a hobby, too many other "have to do's" come up and break the stride, plus theres also the money tree thing...One thing I am sure of tho, its shorter than a payment book would be!

I don't keep a paper trail of receipts, because I don't want to give the Admirals lawyer any ammunition :D

I agree we spend way more than we realize fixing up these old boats, but because it is time so much enjoyed we can't see how it adds up. My 201 SS took 18 months at 3 days a week.

Ya, I think if you kept all your receipts and kept track of your hours, you'd realize how poor your investment in a rebuild project really is, you'll get demoralized, then you'll quit. If it feels good, just do it. Keeping track is necessary if it's a business, but I think there's rarely a successful business in boat rebuilding. But if you're enjoying your time spent doing it .....

Miss Morgan took about a year and a half....but I really enjoyed it. And I more or less have a new boat.

I have at least been trying to keep an account of time and money spent. (Excel spread sheet, the money side will somehow disappear if the admiral ever checks :D). Right now a little over 300 hours  and I just bedded the stringers .

I think I spent about 250-300 hours (plus about another 70 hours researching/reading/asking questions here on iboats) over 8 or 9 months. Due to weather, holidays, etc., I worked in fits and starts. Some weeks I worked all weekend and every evening, other weeks not so much. On average, i spent about 30-35 hours a week on the project.

I never calculated exactly what I spent, but I'm guessing it would be in the neighborhood of $2000-$2500, including tool purchases.

I got the Blue Flamingo for 2 reasons, 1.) I was bored due to having Cabin Fever from being snow bound from a blizzard and 2.) my son and I were on a Non Speaking basis for going on 2 years. I thought it might be a way to "Break the Ice". After 3 years (of my 6 month project) Off and On work (as you all know LIFE always has a way of interrupting the best laid plans of us all) and I also agree with the rest of you that trying to keep track of costs is POINTLESS...

I no longer have a FEVER and my Son and I speak to each other EVERY DAY!!!!

So go ahead, ask me how much my Blue Flamingo is worth???;):D

Very interesting. I started a simple trailer rehab, figured I'd have it done in a week..RIGHT!!! Been almost 3 weeks now but there was a week off due to brother in from MD. Really it took me a week to get it all apart and ground and sanded. Second week spent priming and painting. 3rd week now putting it back together.

Now time is not a problem and can work as long as I want to on it, problem has become Me. I 'm not as fast as I used to be and these days tire easily so that my excuse and I'm sticking with it!
