As i know there is not as much light underwater.Fish eyes are quite basic in that they have a fixed iris and so adjust to different light levels in a different way from ours.

Makes sense to me. Welcome to i-boats by the way!

I know (think) that cat fish are nearly blind. Bass rely on the whole lateral lines thing. Sharks can smell a drop of blood from far away. I'd guess that vision is not the primary sense for many fish.

I realize this thread is pretty old but for it's worth on fish sight and color:

I have a small underwater HD video camera that I have mounted on a 5 foot long monopod. I shoot a lot of underwater video and photo and when I go to some of the piers around here and dip the pole and camera down into the water fish are generally attracted to it.

There is a red blinking light when the camera is recording. The fish might be attracted to this light...hard to say.

I've had perch, bass and sunfish all come right up to the camera to inspect!

When there is a school of baitfish on a sunny day the light reflected off of them shows as flashes of light (shimmering if you will). Maybe the flashing is the draw more than the color??

When I drop just about anything into the water the sunfish will investigate.

Is like to think they see colors somewhat for my own peace of mind. If scientists ever came out and said they didn't see color it would be like a smack in the face from the lure companies. Cuz they sure got me buying more than one of the same lure just to have the different colors lol. Man would I be mad lol!

well i happen to believe that they do see in color, or there black and white vision is like that of an bird of prey; my proof ,although i don't really like to bass fish(i prefer to troll) i find myself doing quite a bit of it. on the lake i fish which is new melones res. i have found very few baits work. i'll break it down.. early early in the morning when you can barely see your hands in your face i use a noisy bait such as a popper or buzzbait, soon as it hits light change up, i go with a rapala broken rap shad, has a dot on the side of gill looks like a cross between a shad and blue gill size 4 and here is where it gets interesting these bass big and small can tell the difference if it is the one i said above or the something else. i've used the same broken rap shad in the same size just different color or pattern and no results, put on the baby shad and wham fish on and its not like it will be spawn either even in pre and post spawn mode these fish love this bait. if i had to choose a bait to go fish bass with me on melones i would choose that one. and another bait that works is a gary yamamoto senko, in 7 inch watermelon.(its a rubber worm the size of a quarter around the entire length) this is going to sound really weird but we hook them in the middle like a kid would put a worm on a hook and just drop them off the side of the boat let them hit bottom 30-40 feet and pick them up about 1-3 feet and let them sink, basically jig them, and let me tell you i've caught some of the biggest bass i've ever caught doing this. and it only works with the senko 7 in watermelon, tryed punkinseed color, and other brands worms that to me look very similar except the shade of green is different by just a hair and it makes a difference. you will catch fish using baits similar, but if you want to knock em' dead use the real deal and you'll limit out in no time, but i always release cause i don't eat em and they don't stock the lake so i release for future fun. proof is in the pudding the lake record shows, this kid caught a 18.11 pound large mouth jigging a homemade jig.

If you look at most of the predator fish they have a white belly so when a fish look up and see this big white belly he's going to run.

I could be wrong, but I think it is the opposite. The white underside blends them in with the above when something is looking from below. The dark top side blends them in from those looking from above.

Most predatory birds have a lighter underside. Most military aircraft are lighter on the bottom than on the top.

Would boat color make a difference? I don't have any idea.

What if I painted the bottom of my boat to look like a school of baitfish, wouldnt that attract more baitfish and or gamefish thinking there was baitfish to prey on?Ive actually thought about doing this since due to the attraction of salmon/trout being attracted to big giant flashers that you would think would actually scare them away.
