O.K. now that's a problem I've never experiencd. I just use 50' of good old orange braided backer line and tie the lead core to that with an albright knot. As for swivels running through the guides, humm, I don't think I want to do that with any of my rods. I'm running G-Loomis Medium Fast S1086's with Shimano Calcutta 400B's right now but I'm changing to the equivelant EDGE rods next season. I might run the TE400's instead of the B's also. I really don't like the idea of running swivels through the guides. I've been using the method described by JLawsen for several years and have landed some big fish with it. Mark, I'm sure your method works well for you and I may even try your knot someday but the thing about swivels running through guides aint gonna happen.

I guess it depends on what your rods cost you. Okuma and Daiwa aren't in the mortgage-the-kids category :)

Nevertheless, they have hard guides which are sufficient for copper and braided lines. I have rods I have been doing this to for about five years with no ill effect- other than pesky fish getting in the boat. I picked up on this reading some stuff by Kavajecz about setting up trolling rods. He's into the money enough and it works for him.

I have done the electrical tape on the spool as well. I like the method. HOWEVER I have had seen issues with the tape "creeping" and then letting go on big fish or with divers. Mono - when stretched onto the spool - does not creep or degrade ever in my experience. The braid gets locked on with the mono.
