I want to do a vacuum test on my volvo 5.7 gipmda. Where do you hook up the tester on the manifold?

Don't have one in front of me, but I think there is around a 1/2" pipe plug in the intake manifold runner between the throttle body and distributor.
Just remove the plug and put in a fitting with a hose barb for your vacuum gauge.

Did you get your fuel pumps running?

I just got the fuel pressure gauge this morning. They are both running but at what pressure i have no idea.
I have tomorrow off I plan on checking fuel pressure and then vacuum. When these tests are done I should know a lot more about the condition of my engine. Thanks Don for all your help both directly or indirectly(I read a lot of your posts to other people) they have helped me a lot.

Ok tested fuel pressure and vacuum today. Here is what I got.

Low pressure pump was about 6 or 7 psi the high pressure pump was 18 psi. So I am assuming the high pressure pump is bad.
The vacuum was good about 20 but it was not steady it slowly moved back and forth between 20 and 22.

Probably not the pump since the pressure is about 5 psi above max.
have a look at this troubleshooting chart.

Don, are you sure about that? It's the one with one pump directly above the filter in front of the engine then another at the back of the intake manifold. If the first pump is putting out 6 psi why would they have a second to raise it to 9psi ? I thought I read somewhere that the second pump was supposed to run in the 20's for psi.

Yes, I am sure about the pressure. That info is from the MD model (94) service manual. The high pressure pumps were the same 11?2 psi from 94 through 97 models. None of them were 20. The next step up in 98 was 29 psi.

Ok so while I was at it I checked the timing today. It was 30 degrees advanced at 1000 rpm. I have a rinda codemate code reader that will also put the ECM in service mode to set the timing. I tried my hardest today to set the timing at 10 degrees and the closest I could get it was 20 degrees and still have the engine run. It will run great at 1000 rpm but at idle it will surge a little and die. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
