neighbor came over the other day with a brand new toyota sequia

Sweet machine - too much electronics for my taste though.

Claim 1 - It tows more than any other SUV in its class 9,100

Claim 2 - 20 miles per gallon highway 14 mixed

claim 3 - he pays 167 a month on a 10 year loan

This was all worked into the conversation over about 20 minute time frame.

Each claim i met with disbelief and he was ready with "facts" and "figures"

NOW he is a former used car salesman himself. He sold cars at Hertz used cars

I did let him have his "day" as he was very proud of his machine....

I guess being the season I should just grin and bear it!!

Why counter the claims at all? They sound extravagant, but Toyota has an earned reputation for making pretty good machines.

If the Seq.. . . Um, zeekwoyah, . . .er, truck makes him happy rejoice with him. :)

I compare his vehicle payment to mine, and keep my 5 year old paid for F-150 Lariat and I don't need to tow that much, only 5000lbs :) Geeze, how much is he going to pay in interest over 10 years... Ouch. Looks like toyota.com lists the price for a Seq. SR-5 at nearly 33k. If he were to keep it 10 years, he'll have over 50k in it easily. No thanks.I'd rather use that cash elsewhere.

To each his own.

Re: How do you counter the truck BS??

You could just let it all go, but if you really want to counter his "facts" with "facts" of your own, here's what I found:

According to Trailerboats magazine's tow rating database, an 05 Sequoia is rated at 6200lbs for 4wd and 6500 for 2wd. Both of these with the 4.7 V-8. It doesn't say anthing about axle ratios or tow packages. While this number seems a little low, 9100 seems WAY HIGH.

The mileage probably is close to being accurate. The 5.3 V-8 in the Chevy Tahoe's seems to do about the same. And it is a Toyota, it should get good mileage. Just wait til he tows something with it, though!

I didn't think any manufacturers were offering 10 year loans. 6 years (72 months) I have heard of. GM and Ford both offered 0% for 72 months a while back.
$167/mo for 10 years most easily works out as $20040 financed at 0% interest. I find that hard to beilieve that you could get 0% for 10 years. So, Jason has it right there, how much extra interest is he paying? A lot!

Hope that helps, if you really decide to challenge him.

Why is it such a big deal?

Is it skin off your nose if he actually got what he thinks he got? Would it be some sort of victory if you disproved his claims?

My dad had a perfect answer for guys who wanted to boast up what a great deal/dog/job/whatever he had. He would smile, pat the guy on the back and say, "That's just great for you, Joe. Congratulations."

His explanation to me was, "If it makes him feel like a better man maybe it will help him become one."

The way I found to deal with this is tell him the next time you going fishing you'll take your boat and he can drive.

The last time I did this you should have seen the look on the guys face when I let down all 560 lbs of tongue weight down on the back of his 5.9 Durango.

Re: How do you counter the truck BS??

Sorry I did not put in a critical part of the info...

He would point at my Explorer and say

I bet i get better mileage

I can tow more than yours

What are your car payments mine are only ....

The issue is that if he was really just happy about getting his new truck, like my BIL who just bought a new Z71 suburban (sweet truck)then i would be just as happy.

But when someone tells you the sky is blue and he knows it is blue because he is a meterologist and it is midnight then it sort of bothers me...

TMI Too much information! You can let the guy irk you (which it sounds like or ignore it) or just not feed his feeble fire.

Car payments are personal! Just smile and tell him yours is paid for!

Happy holidays!

Bob

Tomatolord,
You'll get the last laugh when he tries to trade it in in 5 years and finds out he still owes about 75% of the original purchase price and truck is going to book for about 30-35%, And if he is a Former used car guy its a sure bet he didn't know how to sell'em, because he sure don't know how to buy'em, Trust me on this one My family has been in the car business for 43 years. We get several people every month Jammed into leases or long term financing, we always say it might not be new but its paid for and thats something to be proud of.

Re: How do you counter the truck BS??

Here's some Toyota stats, some vary by engine and accessory equipment but you'll get the point:

http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/2005/sequoia/specs.html

Summary:
1. Towing capacity: 6500 2WD/ 62004WD (Engine rarely changes this stat - it's more dependent on braking).
1a. Gross Combined Weight Rating (Vehicle and Equip in Tow) 12,000 lbs (All Models)
1b. Vehicle Gross Weight 6600 to 6700
2. Factory MPG Rating 15/18
3. $167/month ?? - So what, what's the interest rate?? If he took a 30 year loan his payment would only be $32/month.
4. MSRP depending upon equipment ranges $32K to $45+K

Sounds like he stretched a few things a little bit, but 'BS makes the world go round' his certainly got a lot of attention.

NOW he is a former used car salesman himself. He sold cars at Hertz used cars
The rental car people??? That's a hoot. He wouldn't know anything about cars then!

Claim 1 - It tows more than any other SUV in its class 9,100
That's the tow rating for the Nissan Armada.

The way I found to deal with this is tell him the next time you going fishing you'll take your boat and he can drive.
That sounds like a good idea, if you have a boat and trailer that weigh about 8000lbs. Then you can ask him why his 9100lb rated truck is struggling so much. Of course, it would be overloaded, so I'd make sure you were belted in! And he also would be the guy who would sue you, cause your boat was too heavy.

But really, I hope you let him have a Merry Christmas. And go ahead & let him have a Happy New Years, too. Only bring up the facts given here, if he starts rubbing it in on you again. Or better yet, wait until he starts when there's a crowd around, and distribute the facts to everyone else! :D Because after all, whether it tows/costs/gets mileage like he says, it is a pretty nice vehicle to just drive around!

Or just let it go, and laugh every time you see him!

Re: How do you counter the truck BS??

I had a friend buy a big balls GMC 1 ton fully loaded blah blah for 40something thousand dollars and he had to bring it by to boast. To his credit he never said anything derogatory about my 95 Ford (in fact he felt I got a good deal when I bought it for $3500-it booked for $7000 when I bought it with new paint job etc). He showed me all its leather bells and whistles and I just nodded my head and said "cool". I have no problem with other people spending their money. In fact, If it benefits me, even better. As long as you are happy with your rig, he can have his 10 year mortage. It'll bite him in the hiney, you are much better off. he just doesn't realize it yet.

When he said he had a 10 year loan for a car I wouldnt have been able to stop laughing. I presume that if its a write off the insurance company only pays the book value in which case if its nicked and destroyed in 5 years he'd be in big trouble paying off a car he didnt have. Sounds to me like your friend has big ideas but small pockets next time he starts bragging say "but wouldnt it be better to buy a car you can afford" :D

Re: How do you counter the truck BS??

Yep a 10 yr car loan is an auto finance boon for whoever lent him the money! Like a 40 year mortage on a house, but at least the house will keep going up in value. That is why I will probably never buy a new boat, those 15 year loans just don't make sense to me. Never makes sense to finance a depreciating asset over that much time. Better to get a lease return 2-3 years old and buy an extended warrantee just in case.
Sometimes people tell you what they did just to get a sort of justification from others, in this case I think I'd just smile and let him enjoy it, no sense in arguing something that he feels he is right about.

Just the thought of a 10 year car loan makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Even a 5 year is going to have you upside down for a while.

I got feeling all Christmassy or something yesterday and started thinking about buying a new Jeep WK. Then I started running some numbers. Then I spent some time smoothing those neck hairs back down and decided to get some more time out of the old one. My '97 GC stickered for about 35K new. I bought it in '99 for 20k. 15 grand is a helluva tax for 2 years of driving something new.
