How do you clean water ports

I have a 1986 Johnson 110 hp outboard that sat for a while and is now buzzing like it is overheating.

I think it might have been running a little lean but the motor did sit for 3 years outdoors prior to putting it back in the water.

I had the engine compression checked and the Marina confirmed it was rebuilt right before it sat. The engine runs perfect but once it starts to buzz for an overheat warning it doesn't take long to repeat. Even if it sets for a couple hours.

I was afraid maybe a mud dauber or something plugged one of the water ports but I wanted to know the easiest way to test and clean?

Also where is the thermostat located and how do you replace it?

First off how is the water flow from the tell-tale?
When does it overheat...
At idle in neutral?
In gear at low speeds?
In gear at higher speeds?

Although I can't see the thermo stat getting funky to the point it would stick open right after a rebuild and just sitting.
I mean a fresh rebuild they should have replace thermos , valves , water pump upper/lower water tube seals.

Might be alittle tight to get in there, might have to dig to get in there abit.

Its gonna be the horizontal long rectangle plate with two hoses coming from it. Thats the thermostat / pressure valve housing. Theres 2 thermo stats and 2 pressure valves I believe.

If you still want to get in there I replace thermos and their gaskets , and the 2 housing gaskets atleast and inspect the other parts for wear. Although heres a list of all the parts in there that can be replaced.

2 x Part 33 0332369 Gasket

2 x Part 32 0321692 Gromet

2 x Part 76 0318395 Valve

2 x Part 78 5005440 Thermo stat

2 x Part 93 0321932 Thermo stat gasket

2 x Part 94 0317245 Spring

You can try this first to see before you dig in.

The last link seems to be the best price $23 for the juice and the mixer.

Or get a solution that kills salt/sediment scale build up and is made for outboards (safe on aluminium blocks) and put a diluted mixture of that and water in a test barrel and run the engine in that solution.

I would run it in the barrel abit then turn off and let it sit. Do it again mabey 2-3 times then followed by a all water flush.

You said it sat for three years, is the water pump working properly?

Don't forget the deflectors, in the water passages, under the heads. They can deteriorate and move.
