For about $30 you can buy a Seloc, or Chilton, or whatever repair manual four you year that will give step by step directions. I find timing of outboards is something I leave to the pros. The book also talks about cleaning fuel pump, carburetter, impeller, and most other problems. Mine has saved me a lot of money.

If it is a universal magneto motor from the 60's-70's with two sets of breaker points, the ignition timing is set by the breaker point gap. Usually gapping them to 0.020" will produce an acceptably running motor. There is another adjustment for when the carb starts to open up as the armature plate rotates as the throttle is opened. Usually there is a mark on the plate for that throttle cam timing point.

Depends a lot on Model number...i.e. points or electronic ignition?

There is no timing per see. As mentioned, set the points and also adjust the cam on the follower above the carb where it runs on the cam on the ignition plate so that the carb plate begins to move when the follower hits the mark. There are 2 small bolts that you can loosen on the bottom of the ignition plate to move the cam.

The timing of that engine is set by the flywheel key aligning with the crankshaft, that is.... if the key in the crankshaft is aligned with the flywheel and IS NOT sheared, the engine is in time. The only other requirement is that the points are set properly as follows.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.
