How do I test and run a 165 Mercruiser out of the boat

I've pulled out a 1974 ish Mercruiser 165 from a boat, and I want to test it to see if it runs, and what the compression is. How do I set this up to run? I get attaching a gas tank to the intake for the fuel pump, and attaching a hose to the water tank, but I have no idea how to wire this up or what to do. Any advice is welcome.

I'm figuring out the same thing now. I did my compression test today by pulling the distributor cable then jumping the starter solenoid (and spark plugs pulled)

Shove garden hose in line to thermostat housing. Connect battery to starter. Jumper battery to coil +. Ignition is now hot. Jumpter s terminal on starter to b terminal to start

Where do I jump the negative terminal on the ground to?

That goes to negative on the battery. If you need to know oil pressure and temperature you'd get a mechanical oil pressure gauge at the auto parts store and put it where the electrical oil pick up normally lives. Temperature can be taken with a laser thermometer.

The block for negative side of battery

The points or electronic ignition takes care of the negative side of the coil.

You add nothing to the negative side of the coil
