How do I strip glue from underneath boat numbers?

Hi,

I've just removed the black plastic numbers from my '68 Starcraft Holiday. using a hairdryer (as recommended by others on iboats - it worked great - Thanks!). What looks like glue residue, and a blue sticker from underneath the state registration has been left behind. What's the best method to use to remove this? I was thinking acetone, but don't want to do that if it may damage the paint.

Not sure if the paint is original to the boat or not.

Before getting too aggressive, try Xylene--available in the paint section of most stores. It does not aggressively remove the goo, but is easy on the paint and skin. --Oh, Yeah--You could try Goo-Gone

Try a product call Goo Gone. If that does not work muriatic acid should. Either will take the wax off too if there is any. The acid is available at any hardware for about $5 per gallon (you will only need a few oz) or you can buy the same stuff at a boat yard called On Off for about $20 per qt but it comes in a fancy red & white bottle. Either product-- apply using gloves and let it soak a little while.

Try it in an out of the way area. If memory serves, it is basically acetone and may dissolve your paint. Read the label. Give WD 40 a try. Edit: Searched after reply, not acetone, it is naptha. Goo gone is used to remove dried paint spills so be careful.

Might give a magic eraser and bit of rubbing alcohol a try. There's also a product called Bar Keepers Friend that you could give a whirl.

I've tried ALL the tricks above and more ... The ONE AND ONLY way to go is the 3m stripe off wheel low speed in a cordless drill blows through the vinyl AND the glue like a tornado through a trailer but doesn't hurt gelcoat, paint, aluminum, chrome, or even the plastic canoe I used it on!

But SOOOOOO worth it... When I look back at the hundred or so hours I spent heating and picking or all the money wasted on strippers (not the fun kind) and cleaners it makes me sick knowing how easy it could have been.

Honestly we NEED to make a tutorial on the stripe off wheel a sticky. so people stop messing around with hair dryers heat guns and chemicals

2nd, all those recommending the 3M stripe wheel remover. This thing rocks! I have removed all the dealer stickers from my cars all with my neighbors and co-workers. Along with an old pin stripe on my last truck.

My method consists of cleaning the immediate and surrounding areas from all dust, mud, debris and soaking the sticker with good old WD-40 and then using the wheel at a SLOW speed and then use a WD-40 soaked rag to clean up the area along with wheel. Then wash the surface with mild soap and wax the surface and your done.

I just used acetone on 50 year old stickers but that was on fiberglass.

There's a product I have used to remove stickers on trucks called PB Blaster
Worked great from an auto parts store. It is a great penetrating oil in a arrisal can. Every shop should have some.
GooGone is a great product also

I found my Finger Nail, patience, a rag and goo-be-gone worked for me.
Then some Cleaner Wax.

A beer in one hand works well too!!!

Or use a buffer and some compound ..

Your never going to get rid of the Ghost behind the glue though.

But for everyone else .. its heat and patience.
