Been awhile.... It should have a oval plate on the side of the driveshaft housing, Remove the plate, and you will see a shift rod, un-do one of the bolts that will split the shift shaft. Then just un-do the bolts that hold the lower to the upper, and pull down. If it don't have the oval plate, then I'm not sure.

I do not think there is a shift rod on a TD-20 model !!----It is a direct drive model.-------Why do you want to remove the lower unit on it ?

I am also wondering why you want to remove it? I've worked on about a bazillion motors of various models in those days and can't remember ever having the lower unit off a TD. But maybe I did and just don't remember.

Even for impeller replacement you don't need to remove the lower unit since the impeller is actually on the propeller shaft on the TD & TS motors. Only when you get into the 1950+ TNs are the impellers in the midsection above the shock absorber.

I'm parting out the motor because the compression is low. Worked it out - I ended up taking off the powerhead (which turned out to be unnecessary). You have to disconnect the control cable clamp from near the powerhead - that lets the control cable pull through and let's the lower unit come out.

If it has a clutch cable, it is not a TD. It is a TN.

Think of it this way:
TD=Direct drive
TN=Neutral Clutch

They say----" garbage in = garbage out "----Which means model # should be correct to get good feed back !!

What do you consider low compression? Those motors run fine with 60#s of compression.
