I picked up a new drain plug tube for the transom today. How is the best way to install this unit? It is flared on one end and I know the other end needs to be flared after it is fit into the transom, but I was told that it takes a special tool to do this. Hummm. I guess this is where I fabricate something. Any ideas how? I don't have a machine shop to make the tool.

--------------------
Tim,
Just a high tech redneck!/Transom thingy tool maker

Funny, I just looked at one today at Boaters World. It was as you said and there were absolutely no instructions on the card it was packed with. It's the same as pictured here at iboats. I put it back on the hook and walked away. I have the same question as you. The employees are totally worthless at the local BW.

Somebody makes and sells a flanging tool, I've seen it for sale...about 35 bucks. This last year I need to do the job and ran into the same situation so I made one out of some old plumbing parts. You might find one here on Iboats, don't know. Mine did a real nice job even tho it looked sort of rough. I suppose I could take a picture and send it to you...or you would be welcome to burro it I suppose...

What I do is cut the tube so about 3/16 is sticking out (the flanged end is fully braced on the other side), I use a hammer and a 3/8th drive extension and tap the edge over to form the flange. I go across back and forth until I have progressed all the way around. I also liberally coat the hole and the outside of the brass tube with 3M 5200 before inserting. I wipe whatever excess sealant has come out when done forming the flange, and call it good. If done right, everything is good and tight. Good luck...

I installed mine with a ball-peen hammer.

I put mine in from the outside and then wedged a 2x4 to keep it from moving out. I had about 3/16 to 1/4" of it on the outside.

slowly start tapping around the tube to get it to start laying over. Really a quick process. I've heard that the tools if not used properly (or not experienced in using them) are harder to use and won't give satisfactory results.

Like Jason said, use lots of 5200.

Why wouldn't you mix up some epoxy, slather it around the hole, push in the tube, wipe up the excess, let it cure, then peen over the open end?

Well I would, except I already did that. Thanks though
