How do i ground my spark plugs?

Hey guys....very new here. I need to perform a compression test but cannot figure out how to properly ground my spark plugs. I don't want to ruin my coil so i want to do this right. I have heard many ways to do this but cannot find something that seems like the "correct" way. I have a Force 125 HP L-Drive Outboard engine. Its a 1989. Anyway, any help would be great!

I made a wire with a bolt attached to one end to place in the spark plug boot and a alligator clip on the other to clip to the ground

pull the plugs
put plugs back into the wires
ground out plugs to block
or just pull ur emergency stop lanyard off so u ground out the ignition
