Hello all, I have looked high and low but for the life of me can't find the info I'm looking for. Here it is; I am trying to replace the water pump/impeller on my 77 evinrude 9.9 hp outboard. I took out the 6 bolts holding the lower unit on but it seems I read somewhere there is some connection under the carb.? How do i access this connection and what does it look like? I looked with a flashlight and saw what looks like the rod shaft? and a pin holding it? Do I have to take of the carb to access this pin? I looked for a diagram online but don't want to spend $40 on one right now. Thanks for any help.

Hello. I own a 79,82 and 85 and they are all the same. After you remove the leg bolts the leg should drop down about an inch. If you look in that space you will see what is called the shift linkage. You remove the bottom bolt from the shift linkage and then the leg can be removed. Pay attention to what side of the motor the bolt heads are on and make sure you put it back the same way. On the end of the leg shift rod you will see that the rod is indented so make sure when reinstalling the leg that the water tube aligns with the grommet on the water pump and the shift linkage indent is perfectly in the coupler before you put the bolt in and tighten it. If it isn't lining up you can shift to reverse and forward to get it positioned better. Just don't turn the linkage as it adjusts permanently when your turning it. Best of luck. Now go find that book cause I'm pretty sure this information will be in there. Enjoy. Rick.

Carbs?? There's more than one? Shoot! Sometimes it's easier to pay someone else to do things but, I want to be able to save $150-300 depending on how long it takes. I am an Electrician and feel like I can build or fix anything. Darn this is frustrating! I know someone on here knows the answer to our question, they just haven't seen the post yet. Optimism's good I guess. I just wanna go fishing!! Thanks Rick!!

jdoshier: Only one carb. to worry about. Those 9.9's are great engines but you should do yourself a favor and order an OMC service manual for your specific engine. With the book I think you will have little problem working on it. You will also need a few tools you may not have like a fly wheel puller, point gauge and infra red temp. sensor. When I went to trade school we were offered a choice between a parking pass and an electrical ticket. I took the pass. Rick.(the plumber) No retaliation please.

Rick- I don't hate you cause your a terd herder! I know a few plumbers who went that way cause they were scared of what they couldn't see but knew could kill'em. Someone's gotta do it. Thanks for the advice. I got the lower unit dropped and what a mess down there. Tons for grease and muck. The kit I got from Quicksilver had a strange o ring the was surrounded metal. I assumed this was a extra part but, where does the little steel pin go? When I pulled the other one off there was not a pin like that. I might get a manual just to have one. What would be the best one to get? I wanna do this right so it doesn't cost me more to repair my repairs..lol I know I saw a diagram someone had posted as a response to a similar question, I just can't find it. Any idea's where to look?

Order the factory service manual. It will save you hours of frustration. Your time is worth something, surely.

We can't really give you step-by-step instructions here...it's just too hard, since every answer brings up more questions. Plus, you need pictures and we can't supply them.

It's all in the factory service manual, step-by-step, with illustrations. It will reduce what can be a several hour job playing it by ear to an easy hour. It's a cheap teacher.

Just click the Manuals link at the top of this page. You'll have it in less than a week.

Maybe not a substitute for a factory manual but there is loads of info on the 9.9 and 15hp models to be found by following a link on the Engine FAQs board

Look HERE

Good advice Vic.S. As far as I'm concerned "the Machinist" articles are a must read for anyone trying to get a better understanding of the 9.9 and 15 motors.
jdoshier: that pin (if I'm guessing right) goes between the brass impeller sleeve and the flat spot on the drive shaft. It locks the impeller from just spinning on the drive shaft. There is an O-ring that goes on top of the drive shaft just below the splines and while we are talking splines, grease the splines real good before putting the leg back on but do not grease the top of the drive shaft as it can cause it to hydrolicly (sp) prevent you from pushing the splines into the power head far enough which will bind up the gear case. Try this link below to see the parts diagram for you motor. Book mark it cause it is valuable. I did say no retaliation but that was cause I new I had it coming. My son is an electrician and a pretty handy fellow. Rick.
