I'm need to copy/burn a CD with 98SE to a new CD-R. How do I do it. I've placed the 98SE CD in the CD player and placed the empty/new CD-R disc in the CD writer/player unit.

I got a copy of Nero Burning rom with the CD writer/player unit but it turns out it was a trial program and it has expired.

Any suggestions what to do? I've had these units for a couple of years but never used them to copy a cd before. I am running Windows XP.

You should be able to do this from within windows explorer. Just a simple drag and drop should make it happen.

The only glitch is you may have to format the cd first to get it to accept.

My HP does it automatically when I load a blank and fill both CD drives... it just prompts me.

Bob

Bob, what program does your HP use to format the new CD-R disc?

Have a peek at "DeepBurner". It is freeware available @ download.com or other locations online. While not the best software, it may do what you need.

One thing XP does well, is make CD burning easy. Unfortunately with 98SE you need to do some manual intervention as others have mentioned, consisting of formatting the cd yourself prior to drag 'n drop copying.

Hope this helps.....a bit.

I'm trying to copy it with drives, on an XP machine, AMD. Just can't find any info on what/why and where.

Bob VT says I have to format the new CD-R disc first, otherwise I'd just drag and drop it from one drive to the other.

If you're running with Windows XP, and have two drives, all you have to do is find your way to the Windows 98 cd contents, press Control&A (highlights everything), then press Control&C (Copy), then find your way to your blank cd drive and press Control&V(Paste). After that, click File and Write these files to cd.

If you do it this way, you don't need to format the cd or anything.

Re: How do I copy a CD?

Sorry Boom I misread your original post, and after reading about your adventures with the 98 upgrade I assumed you were using 98 to copy. I understand you goal now.

Copying files by hand to make a cd (as rudderman has mentioned) will work, but I don't believe it will be bootable. Again, I may be wrong.

To actually copy a complete cd I use Nero since the Xerox machine just wont work. I don;t believe XP has a built-in function to "copy" a full cd.

Did your version of XP come loaded with a program called RecordNow? If so, just launch the program and it will lead you through the process. Otherwise, you can just drag and drop the files in Windows Explorer.

Negativo, Relentless, do not have the program. I have XP Pro. It's been mentioned that a fresh CD-R needs to be formatted before you can copy a program too it.

I just did an internet search and RecordNow is a stand alone program that cost about the same a Nero burning rom. It kind of frosts me that the only software that came with my TDK CDRW unit was a demo version.

Yep that looks like it. Mines at home at the moment so I can't confirm if it is version6, but I'm pretty sure it is. I am also still running 98se - why fix what ain't broke right? The eBay auction is for suite3 - damn thing does everything - DVDs', SVCDs'.

I personally don't use it much but my kids tell me it great compared to roxio.

Aldo
