How do I communicate with my router?

I'm trying to get back into my Netgear 8 port router to re-enable the DHCP function before I put it away. I tried both connecting the computer to the inlet (internet) port and then to one of the 8 outlet ports. None of these connection attempts would bring up the configuration screen when I typed in the 192.168.0.1 that was required to communicate with it.

One of these methods is how I gained access before when I went in and disabled the DHCP function the other day. I just wanted to return it to defaults before I put it away. I did hit the reset button but wanted to be able to go back in and verify that is was back to default.

I did just get my new Netgear 8 port switch and I wanted to get this done before I unplugged the router to put it away.

You'll have to reset the router, there should be a reset button on the rear of the router near the plugin for power. Just hold it until you see it reboot.Usually around 10 seconds. And that ip address should be 192.168.1.1

Did you ever get it to work?
I just did mine with the extra router I had and got it working, if your still wanting to try and get this to work I can tell you what I did.

At the command prompt type ipconfig /all type what it says under dhcp server (mine is 192.168.1.1) in the internet browser...If it says nothing or 0.0.0.0 then type ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, then type what it says under dhcp server...

......Did you ever get it to work?......

No, not really. After disabling the DHCP function, the two closest computers would access the internet. The next furthest one away (cable distance) became very intermittent in it's access. My Verizon Network Extender would go in and out of system signal and my two laptops would never be able to access the internet (via wireless signal from the DSL Modem/router/wireless router. That was even though they each showed they were connected with a strong signal.

I just pulled the 8 port router out of service and installed the new Netgear 8 Port switch. I now have 3 devices hooked to the DSL Modem/router and two devices hooked to the new 8 port switch, all with one cable going from the modem/router to the switch. Now, everything is working as it should.

I'd still like to go back and access the 8 port Modem. Which port do I connect the computer to? The inlet port or one of 8 outlet ports? I will then try the 192.168.1.1 even though that is not what I used before.

Which plug on the router, should I have the computer connected to? I will be doing this without an internet connection. I will just unplug one of the computers from the switch and plug it in to the proper port on the router and do as you say.

one of the 8 ports if it is the one on the daisy chain, the inlet port is only for the modem if used.
I just did what your trying to do with an extra router, for a better signal in the other part of my house, I had laying around when I saw your inquiry about this in another thread, I said why not if it'll work so I tried it and it worked.

Here is how I did it and it was real simple, leave the working router alone, don't do anything with it, on the router your trying to add after you reset it and have access to it, change the ip address to 192.168.1.140 and save it, wait for the setup to restart and access the setup again and turn off the DHCP Server or disable it, save the setup that is all you should need to do, then plug your cable into one of the 8 ports of the new router and the other end into one of the open ports on the previously working router...Walla, you should be good to go..If it has wireless on it , it should also work as well..

Re: How do I communicate with my router?

After successfully daisy chaining my new router and got it to work for two laptops and 3 cell phones on the wireless I now have a full signal in my living room, my main modem is in the back bedroom against the back wall along with the main router and the new router is mounted on the wall in the hallway, now my wife is happy with a full signal which she never could get before now..

Re: How do I communicate with my router?

The computers always go to the numbered ports and the signal from the modem goes in the WAN port...The only exception is if you have an option in your router to turn the wan port into a 5th or 9th(meaning extra) port...Sometimes there is a button on the back for bridged mode and sometimes its in the router setup that you access with 192.168.1.1(or whatever your dhcp address is)...You can plug either router to a computer(port 1 to the NIC card on the computer) and release and renew your ip address, type the dhcp server # into the web browser and check the options...

Re: How do I communicate with my router?

Although I sidelined the 8 port router, in favor of an 8 port switch, I was finally able to access the router to ensure that I had gotten it back to its default settings. I plugged it in to a laptop (wireless disabled) via one of its LAN ports and did the IPCONFIG/release and IPCONFIG/renew and it returned the router to the 192.168.0.1 IP addy. This was all after I had hit the reset button. Now it is all back to default with the DHCP function enabled and ready for the next conventional router needs that it may be put to.

Thanks for all your help! ....and have a Happy New Year!

btw, the 8 port switch was a total plug and play operation. My little home network is firing on all stations.

Yes it is and most aren't online all the time, but it is amazing how many devices can be on a router at any particular time..

BTW, both routers are still working fine here..
