you can keep the bucket and stator in one piece, although I've always done it this way anyway. it takes seconds to pop the bolts out with an air ratchet.
Keep in mind there are two places you have oil in your SJ. the stator as well as the gearcase. Both should be changed yearly with the expensive merc high performance stuff, NOT regular merc gear oil.
